How to set up your new iPhone

If you’re not familiar with the process, don’t worry, it’s very easy. During setup, you’ll be asked if you want to transfer your number from your old iPhone. Once you agree, it will take a minute or two for cellular data to be activated on your new iPhone and you’ll be good to go. Keep in mind that your old physical SIM card will no longer work once you do this.

If you’re using an Android phone (with or without eSIM support), you’ll need to scan a QR code provided by your carrier. This could also happen if you’re having trouble with an iPhone. Just contact your carrier and they should be able to sort out the problem quickly.

How to add other accounts and set preferences

Otherwise, it’s just a matter of customizing your preferences. Want to add an email account? Go to Settings, Mail, Accountsand choose Add accountWant to adjust which apps refresh in the background (and drain your battery in the process)? Head to Settings, General, Background app refreshand activate your little heart. Do you want to save time on web forms? Go to Settings, Safari, Autocompleteand pre-load your contact information. You can also turn on the battery percentage view by going to Settings, Battery, and activating Battery percentage.

Your new device will be running iOS 18, which features some important new features, but you should change these privacy settings immediately.

One last recommendation: get rid of the clutter. iOS now lets you delete many, many stock Apple apps. Do it! I promise, you’ll feel great.
