Inventory important recordings and note who owns each video. Separate personal material from team-owned content before making changes.
Check plan, role and workspace download permissions in the linked official help. Starter does not include video downloads; eligible paid-plan roles differ. Do not assume a share-link viewer can export a video.

For an eligible recording, open its video page and use the download control described in the linked Loom help. Save one permitted MP4 and reopen it locally; check duration, audio and picture, and verify captions separately rather than assuming they are embedded.

Record where the current share links are used: documentation, support replies, onboarding pages and embedded players. Exporting a video does not update those links.
Decide whether you need local files only or a hosted library with permissions and share links. Add the cost and administration of any separate storage service.
Test the replacement with one ordinary screen, camera and microphone recording. Have another person open the result without your logged-in session.
Move a small batch, verify the new destinations and update the references. Keep a migration ledger and confirm access after cancellation before ending the old plan.

A local recorder is not a complete hosted replacement

OBS Studio can be a recording candidate, but selecting a desktop recorder alone does not establish your sharing, storage or team-permission workflow. Compare the finished process rather than a single feature checkbox.

Account for total workflow cost

Count the people who need to create recordings, not just viewers. Check retention, storage and exports separately from recording length. Unknown pricing stays unknown in the finder.

A useful final check

Open the replacement link in a signed-out browser on another device. Check permissions, playback, captions and download behavior, then ask a colleague to repeat the task.

Inspect the exact editions

Open the full evidence record before choosing. A documented candidate is not a completed migration test.
