Footy fans get called out for SEXISM over their reaction to AFL star's girlfriend making bizarre statement about why she doesn't live with her footy star boyfriend

A journalist has branded football fans “sexist and misogynistic” for their reaction to Dee Salmin’s explanation of why she chooses not to live with her boyfriend, Darcy Moore.

Salmin, co-host of Triple J’s The Hook Up with Pip Rasmussen, has been dating the Collingwood player for more than a year.

But the radio host surprised some fans in July after she gave a lengthy explanation of why they live apart, adding that part of her reasoning was related to “heterodynamic learned behaviors.”

“I don’t live with my partner at the moment and we have very different, independent and busy lives,” Salmin said.

‘We can have a lot of what we had when we were still single in our relationship.

‘But I wonder how much you can maintain that when you end up living together. “A lot of this is heterodynamic learned behaviors that you could fall into.”

The comments caused a storm on social media, with Collingwood fans having mixed reactions to Salmin’s explanations.

One social media troll caused a stir online by writing: “Darcy has money, fame and elite football skills but she switched her gonads to a feminist witch.”

Salmin has since responded to that individual, and the radio host posted a video clip of her and her boyfriend during the 2024 Brownlow Awards on Instagram, adding a cover of the Eagles’ 1972 classic, Witchy Woman.

She captioned the post: “Immortalizing the biggest compliment I’ve ever received.”

On Wednesday, it appeared that Salmin had also changed her Instagram bio to call herself “a gonad-stealing feminist witch” by adding a crystal ball emoji and a star emoji.

Many have come to Salmin’s defense following the barrage of online abuse, including journalist and Collingwood supporter Phoebe Saintilan, who lashed out at online trolls who had “embarrassed Salmin’s character”.

In an article published on Lost perspectivesTitled: ‘A love letter to Dee Slamin, from a long-time Collingwood fan’, Saintilan delved into the social media reaction that followed Salmin’s comments.

Journalist Phoebe Saintilan criticized online trolls for her comments

Journalist Phoebe Saintilan criticized online trolls for their “sexist” comments following Salmin’s comments.

“What I witnessed on the Collingwood forums and in the comment sections of Facebook groups and Instagram pages was simply sexism and misogyny,” Saintilan wrote.

The journalist added that she was “shocked” after reading some of the comments, stating that they “reminded me how far we still have to go both within the Collingwood club and across the AFL as a whole.”

Some had even alleged that their decision not to live together had been the cause of Moore’s decline in performances.

One social media user wrote: “The sex better be way better than spectacular to put up with this nonsense.”

“This guy has to be the smartest footballer ever,” said another, referring to Moore.

Meanwhile, one added: “No wonder Darcy Moore is playing so poorly.” Her head is full of conscious, politically correct, feminist garbage.

The broadcaster also changed her Instagram bio after receiving abuse on social media.

Upon reading the abuse that has been directed at Salmin and Moore (pictured), Santilan said she was “shocked” and was reminded how much work remains to be done to eradicate sexism and misogyny in society.

Saintilan questioned the outrage over Salmin’s comments, stating that perhaps many fans chose to attack Salmin because she “doesn’t fit the mold of what these fans see as a ‘traditional’ partner of an AFL player”.

Concluding the column, Saintilan says the radio presenter is a “breath of fresh air for Collingwood” and was someone the Magpies “badly needed”.

He also appeared to note some of the controversies that have shadowed the club, singling out former club president Eddie McGuire in particular.

McGuire resigned from his position in 2021 following a backlash in relation to the findings of a report which claimed there had been systemic racism in Collingwood.

It also came after the media personality was accused of making a “misogynistic” comment on Triple M in 2016 towards Caroline Wilson.
