Five Years After Megxit, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Struggle with ‘Unfulfilled Potential,’ Says Expert

Royal commentators are weighing in on Prince Harry’s trajectory since his exit from royal life, with some suggesting that without the backing of Buckingham Palace, the Duke of Sussex’s potential remains largely untapped. In a recent article for News.com.auRoyal expert Daniela Elser explored Harry’s role in the world of philanthropy, reflecting on his efforts since Megxit and questioning whether he has managed to establish himself as a global pioneer.

Elser’s article comes as the fifth anniversary of Harry and Meghan Markle’s exit from the royal family approaches. Reflecting on her experience, she wrote: “As the fifth anniversary of Megxit rapidly approaches (which is more than a little mind-boggling), the Sussexes, on their own, have so far yet to match in magnitude anything they did before January 8, 2020.”

The expert questioned Prince Harry’s standing in the philanthropic world, particularly in comparison to other attendees at major events such as those held in New York. “What are the chances that the Duke will be considered an equal to those gathering in New York this week?” she asked.

While Harry and Meghan continue to attract significant global attention, especially during their recent visits to Nigeria and Colombia, Elser said the level of media interest and coverage has not been matched by their post-royal accomplishments. “When Harry and Meghan go on a ‘royal’ tour, such as their recent trips to Nigeria and Colombia, they attract a great deal of global attention,” she noted. “However, the level of coverage and interest in them is not matched by their independent post-royal accomplishments.”

In Elser’s view, much of the debate around Prince Harry centers on his “unfulfilled potential.” She acknowledged his dedication to important causes but noted the challenges he faces without the backing of the royal machine. “Harry is a man who cares and cares deeply and whose dedication to improving the world is undeniable,” Elser said. “It’s just that, stripped of his royal identity and amputated from the well-oiled machinery of the palace and its support network, he has yet to make a real impression on his own.”

Since stepping back from royal duties, Harry and Meghan have embarked on several philanthropic initiatives, including launching their Archewell Foundation and signing deals with streaming platforms like Netflix and Spotify. However, critics like Elser believe that despite these efforts, the couple has yet to achieve the same global impact they had when they were part of the royal family.

As the anniversary of his departure approaches, questions remain over whether Harry will be able to fully realise his potential outside the royal spotlight. For now, it seems the conversation will continue about the duke’s changing role in philanthropy and whether he can truly step out of the shadow of the monarchy.
