A group of eight US newspapers is suing ChatGPT maker OpenAI and Microsoft, alleging that the tech companies have been “stealing millions” of copyrighted news articles without permission or payment to train their AI chatbots. .

The New York Daily News, the Chicago Tribune, the Denver Post and other newspapers filed the lawsuit Tuesday in federal court in New York.

“We have spent billions of dollars gathering information and reporting news in our publications, and we cannot allow OpenAI and Microsoft to expand Big Tech’s playbook of stealing our work to build their own businesses at our expense,” a written statement read. . by Frank Pine, executive editor of MediaNews Group and Tribune Publishing.

The other newspapers taking part in the lawsuit are MediaNews Group’s Mercury News, Denver Post, Orange County Register and St Paul Pioneer-Press, and Tribune Publishing’s Orlando Sentinel and South Florida Sun Sentinel. All newspapers are owned by Alden Global Capital.

Microsoft declined to comment Tuesday. OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In December, the New York Times sued OpenAI and Microsoft on similar grounds, alleging that the creation and training of ChatGPT involved illegal use of copyrighted material. The Times said the technology companies’ product “threatens the Times’ ability to provide that service.”
