One of Sydney’s busiest roads has been paralyzed after a car caught fire in a tunnel.

The car burst into flames as it traveled south along the Eastern Distributor approaching the Bondi and Randwick exit shortly after 12pm on Thursday.

Traffic has since been closed in both directions as Transport NSW urged travelers to allow more travel time and use an alternative route.

The Sydney Harbor Tunnel was also closed to southbound traffic.

A Fire and Rescue spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia the tunnel’s sprinkler system “contained the fire”, which was extinguished after between 30 and 45 minutes.

Emergency services are working to remove the car and allow traffic to pass.

A NSW Ambulance spokesperson said paramedics treated four people at the scene for light smoke.

Two of whom, a man and a woman, both aged in their 30s, were taken to St Vincent’s and Prince of Wales hospitals in a stable condition.

Footage from inside the tunnel shows travelers trapped outside their cars, looking confused.

Traffic jams in both directions currently extend from Moore Park to just north of the Sydney Harbor Bridge.

More to come.
