Eagles stars have been advised not to carry any valuables on the street in Brazil as a sort of “do’s and don’ts” safety guide ahead of the 2024-25 season opener in Sao Paulo.

Speaking to reporters ahead of next week’s game overseas on Sept. 6, Eagles wide receiver AJ Brown revealed some of the safety measures the team is taking while in the South American country.

“We had a meeting yesterday with a bunch of things that shouldn’t be done. I’m just trying to go there, win a football game and come back here. (…) We’re not there to see the city, this is not a vacation, this is a football game. (…) It’s as simple as walking down the street with your phone in your hand… it’s crazy,” said Brown, 27.

“After hearing all that, I’ll probably be in my room,” he added.

Compared to the United States, Brazil has a significantly higher crime rate (42.24 vs. 65.07), according to Number – the world’s largest database on cost of living and quality of life.

Reveals dos and don'ts in Brazil at a press conference on Thursday

Eagles wide receiver AJ Brown has revealed some of the safety measures the team was instructed to follow ahead of their season opener against the Green Bay Packers in Brazil.

A county’s overall crime rate is calculated by dividing the total number of index crimes reported by law enforcement agencies in each county by the county’s population and multiplying the result by 100,000.

According to Numbeo, there is also a big difference in safety comparisons between the US and Brazil. In the US, the safety rate for walking alone during the day is 70.63, while in Brazil it is 50.57.

Problematic violent crimes, such as vandalism and theft, are also much higher in Brazil (71.13), ranking high among all countries in the world, than in the Americas (57.81).

Concerns about being mugged or robbed in the United States are also relatively lower (43.30) than in the Portuguese-speaking nation (74.17).

Crime has increased in both countries over the past three years (67.92 in the United States and 72.11 in Brazil), but the overall level of crime is significantly higher in Brazil (75.70) than in the United States (55.11).

The Eagles-Packers game will be the first NFL game to be played in Brazil. The game will be played at the Arena Corinthians in the country’s largest city. Sao Paulo, the largest city in the southern city and the seventh largest city in the world by population, has the sixth highest crime rate in Brazil (70.3), according to Numbeo. In first place is Rio (77.5).

By comparison, Philadelphia’s crime rate is 66.02, according to the website, and New York City’s is 50.63.

Oddsmakers are banking on the Eagles’ resurgence heading into the new season, though the team will enter Week 1 without veteran starter James Bradbury, who suffered a lower leg injury earlier this week.
