Coronation Street star Bill Roache was seen at the post office in the midst of his bankruptcy after being given three months to clear a £500,000 tax debt.

The actor, 91, was told in February that he needed to pay off his huge debt to “allow the property to be sold”.

Bill was seen entering his local post office in Alderley Edge, Cheshire, on Thursday afternoon.

The star looked quite downcast as she made the trip in a white polo, blue trousers and a puffer jacket.

Bill earns around £250,000 a year playing Ken Barlow in the long-running soap, but has racked up half a million in debt to the taxman.

He reached an agreement in 2018 to settle the £588,015.18 bill, but according to reports last month he has only paid £41,666.65 so far.

Roache is looking to sell some properties to pay off debt with Sun reporting in February that a potential buyer had backed out of a deal.

The High Court has now granted him a 12-week adjournment to “allow the property to be sold”.

Roache did not appear at a specialist hearing, where lawyers for HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) said the sum the actor owes, which was not disclosed in court, has been reduced by payments made.

Jacquille Jarrett, of HMRC, said Roache had requested a 12-week adjournment, which was unopposed, to “allow for the sale of properties”.

Retired Insolvency and Companies Court judge Stephen Baister granted the adjournment and said Roache’s case will return in June.

“Splendid,” Dr Baister said at the end of the hearing, which lasted less than a minute, at the High Court in London.

Roache is best known for his portrayal of Ken Barlow on the ITV soap opera for over 60 years after debuting in its first episode in 1960.

The actor, who holds the Guinness World Record for the world’s longest-serving soap star, was appointed OBE in the Queen’s New Year’s Honors list in December 2021 for his services to theater and charity.

Last month, friends in Roache’s spiritual group said he was “doing well” as he “faces bankruptcy” for the second time, according to Mirror.

At a meeting of the Stride for Truth group, one member said they were “100% behind” Roache.

The organisation, which fights for world peace and enlightenment, meets in a room above a foot clinic in Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester.

Roache, who is now the highest-paid member of the cast, earning around £250,000 a year, “owes the taxman almost £550,000”.

Sun released his six-figure debt, just weeks after it was revealed he is facing bankruptcy for the second time.

Roache’s interest payments amount to £14,699, while he also faces late payment penalties of more than £8,000, both included in the total.

A Coronation Street spokesperson told the Mirror: “We are very sorry for Bill’s financial situation. Bill has a current contract with Coronation Street and remains a much-loved member of the cast.
