A woman suffered a brain hemorrhage after she and her baby were hit by a delivery driver who then allegedly placed the baby back in the stroller before fleeing the scene. Sarah Naybeth Parra Ovalles, 45, was arrested and charged with two counts of leaving the scene of an accident, one of which resulted in serious bodily injury.
The incident occurred around 8:30 a.m. Thursday when Parra Ovalles, who reportedly worked as an Amazon driver, entered the Isles Estates neighborhood on NE 193rd Street after identifying herself at the guard gate. Surveillance footage reportedly Parra Ovalles is seen driving a 2022 Hyundai pickup truck making deliveries in the area. Later, a woman walking with her toddler in a stroller and a dog began crossing NE 7th Avenue and NE 191st Street in a crosswalk.
When they were more than halfway there, Parra Ovalles allegedly turned toward them “in the opposite lanes of traffic,” knocking the woman backward onto the pavement and the stroller, with the baby inside, to the ground. According to the arrest report, Parra Ovalles got out of his vehicle, approached the child, adjusted the stroller, placed the baby back inside and then left the scene, he told police. The New York Post.
Both the woman and her son were taken to the hospital. The woman was treated for a skull fracture, bruising and a brain bleed, while the baby suffered a laceration to the forehead, police said. No further details about their recovery were immediately available.
Police identified Parra Ovalles as the driver after interviewing the gate guard and a witness. The witness, who was inside her home at the time, reported hearing a child crying and a car horn beeping. Looking out her window, she saw a woman wearing an Amazon Prime vest standing next to a gray SUV and looking around before getting back into the vehicle and driving away. Her security cameras also captured the incident.
The next day, police asked Parra Ovalles to come in for an interview, during which he admitted to making deliveries and meeting the victims. He said he drove by them and the mother seemed “out of it” and put her hands on the hood of the truck. Parra Ovalles said he asked if the mother was OK, received a nod, and then drove off. However, when shown video of the accident, he denied the accident and invoked his rights.
Parra Ovalles was arrested and taken to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. An Amazon spokesperson issued a statement about the incident: “This is a horrific incident and our thoughts are with this family. We are investigating the matter and will support law enforcement in their investigation. The driver in question is no longer making deliveries on behalf of Amazon.”
