The View’s Joy Behar and her co-hosts were stunned when an earthquake emergency alert sent to New York City residents on Friday interrupted the ABC morning show’s live broadcast.
When Joy, 81, opened the latest episode, she joked, “We’re alive and living from New York, where we just had a 4.8 earthquake,” referring to the incident that occurred at 10:23 a.m. and was felt in New York as well as in New Jersey, Virginia and Philadelphia.
‘Did everyone feel it?’ she asked the live studio audience and some responded “yes” and others responded “no,” prompting her co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin to joke, “It’s like half and half!”
As Sara Haines was about to make a comment, the panel’s cell phones began beeping loudly when the alert came in from New York City warning people to “stay indoors” and only “call 911 if they are injured.” .

Alyssa Farah Griffin (right) joked that only half of the studio audience “felt it” while Sunny Hostin looked confused.
As the hosts, including Ana Navarro and Sunny Hostin, quickly grabbed their cellphones, the TV show went silent for a moment as Joy handed her phone to Sara, 46, and shouted, ‘Stop it! Make it stop!’
As Sara, a mother of three, tried to close all the tabs on Joy’s phone, she commented, “God, how many things do you have open?”
The emergency alert was sent almost an hour after an unexpected earthquake hit the northeast.
“A 4.7 magnitude earthquake has occurred in the New York area,” the alert said.
“Residents are advised to stay home and call 911 if they are injured.”
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the earthquake, which the agency said actually had a magnitude of 4.8, was centered near Lebanon, New Jersey.
The New York Fire Department said there were no initial reports of damage.
The epicenter of the earthquake was near Readington in Hunterdon County, according to New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy.
The emergency alert reached mobile phones about 30 minutes after the earthquake occurred.
Joy and the panel asked the live studio audience if they had felt the earthquake.
The amber alert included a link to an article with safety instructions for when an earthquake occurs.
A follow-up emergency alert was sent at 11:46 a.m. to update New Yorkers on what to expect.
Aftershocks may be felt. ‘New Yorkers can continue with their usual activities,’ the alert said.
The USGS article instructed those who experience an earthquake indoors to stay in the building they are in.
“Get under a desk or table and hold on to it or move into a hallway or against an interior wall,” the post said.
