Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga title hopes all but evaporated after a 2-0 home defeat to Borussia Dortmund on Saturday left them 13 points behind leaders Bayer Leverkusen with seven games remaining.

Bayern, winners of the previous 11 league crowns, were ineffective in attack and their first shot on goal came late in the second half, when regular striker Harry Kane had wasted his best opportunities.

For Dortmund, it was their first league win in Munich in 10 years and the Ruhr Valley club cemented its place in fourth place leading into the group stage of next season’s Champions League.

Asked if the title race was already over, Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel, who will leave at the end of the season, said: “Obviously, yes.

‘After today’s game it is no longer necessary to count points. How many are there now? Congratulations to Leverkusen.”

‘We are very disappointed because we feel that we did not bring the passion necessary to win the game. It was very little on our part in the basics.’

Dortmund scored with their first chance in the 10th minute, after an error by Thomas Mueller and a magnificent pass by Julian Brandt for Karim Adeyemi.

Adeyemi, who is fighting for a place in Germany’s Euro 2024 host team, completed the counterattack with a good shot to beat goalkeeper Sven Ulreich.

The Bayern goalkeeper, who replaced the injured Manuel Neuer, came to the rescue several times in the second half, but was defeated again in the 83rd minute by a powerful low shot from Julian Ryerson.

The Bavarians came close thanks to Kane, who saw a header go just wide and another shot saved by Mats Hummels.

As the disappointed Bayern fans left the stadium before the end, the England striker put the ball into the net in the 89th minute, but his header was disallowed for offside.

Bayern, who will face Arsenal in the Champions League quarterfinals next month, remain on 60 points, while Leverkusen, who beat Hoffenheim 2-1, have 73. Dortmund are fourth with 53, three ahead of RB Leipzig, who tied 0-0. for humble Mainz.
