Dera Karseva chief Baba Tarsem Singh was shot dead inside the premises of Nanakmatta Sahib Gurdwara

Dehradun:

The dera karseva head of the Nanakmatta Sahib Gurdwara in Uttarakhand was shot dead on the shrine premises early this morning by two assailants on motorcycles, police said.

Baba Tarsem Singh was rushed to a hospital in Khatima where he died during treatment, Udham Singh Nagar Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Manju Nath told reporters.

“We have clear (CCTV camera) videos of the attackers. They are both Sikhs,” he said, adding that they fled after the incident.

The Nanakmatta Sahib Gurdwara is a revered Sikh shrine located on the Rudrapur-Tanakpur route in the Udham Singh Nagar district of the state. Footage from CCTV cameras showed the assailants entering the gurdwara on a motorcycle around 6.15 am and firing a rifle at Singh, Nath said, adding that the gunman was riding from the back.

“Two bullets were fired at Singh who was sitting on a chair. The first shot was fired from the front and the other from the back. Singh immediately fell to the ground,” the SSP said.

Eight police teams have been mobilized to arrest the attackers of the Dera Karseva chief, he said.

Terming the incident ‘serious’, Abhinav Kumar, Director General of Uttarakhand Police, said a Special Investigation Team (SIT), comprising personnel from the Special Task Force and local police, has been constituted to probe the incident. After the incident, it will unravel. The help of central agencies will also be sought for this,” he said, adding that “we will arrest the attackers quickly.”
