Inside a simple building in the middle of Sydney’s central business district is a surprising art-deco painting that hides a very funny secret.
The painting of a flapper-style woman drinking champagne is removed to reveal the quirky Messenger Bar that locals can’t get enough of.
Guests can press the ornate buzzer next to the artwork to gain access to the intimate speakeasy located beneath Transport House on Circular Quay.
Visitors can find the historic building by seeing the easy-to-miss sculpture of Mercury, the Messenger of the Gods, above its door and then following the messenger down the stairs to the door disguised as a portrait.
Once inside, they are greeted by a wall of quirky portraits of animals in distinguished clothing, sparkling chandeliers, and shelves full of wine bottles in the dimly lit underground restaurant.

Bar Messenger opened its doors in August 2023 and has hosted themed events ever since.
Next up is Moulin Rogue night on March 8, where patrons can enjoy dazzling Parisian cabaret performances, as well as a Drag Show Cabaret show on March 23.
