Steven Naismith warned that a repeat of the missile launch witnessed before Lawrence Shankland’s penalty could spell the end of the Edinburgh derby as we know it.
Given the chance to cancel out Emiliano Marcondes’ opener from 12 yards, the Hearts captain had to delay his shot for over a minute as home fans threw objects in his direction.
A bottle opener, a lighter, a meat pie and a pair of Apple AirPods were thrown at Shankland as he approached to take the penalty. The Hearts centre-forward was seen taking a bite of the cake before laughing at rival fans.
Meanwhile, Naismith believes such embarrassing scenes could eventually lead to a reduction in the number of Hibs fans attending future games at Gorgie.
“The way he acts for the penalty and his calmness to find the net are the decisive moments in games,” he said. ‘But all the things that are being thrown around, they’re just not acceptable.
Steven Naismith warned that missile launches, as seen during Tuesday’s match between Hibernian and Hearts, could spell the end of the Edinburgh derby.
Lawrence Shankland stepped up to take a penalty late in the first half but was hit with numerous missiles, including a bottle opener.
A meat pie was also thrown onto the pitch which the center forward picked up and took a bite of.

“If you later analyze that, what is going to happen is that they are going to reduce the number of fans that can enter that stand and that is going to impact what I think is a good atmosphere and a good derby, which has a fierce rivalry.
‘It’s just idiots who are going to ruin the party for everyone.
‘I think it was all that was in everyone’s pockets, whether it was comics or vapes or whatever. “It’s just not good enough.”
Naismith was disappointed that his team did not do enough to win the competition and extend their Premiership lead over their city rivals. “It was a little bit better than our last game (at Ibrox), but it was probably a little bit lacking in quality for both teams,” he said.
“At times it was from start to finish, both teams had opportunities and, in the end, that bit of quality was what was missing in the game.
“Going behind, we showed good resilience to recover and dominate the game a little bit. When we had control of the ball and made the right decisions, we were a threat and created chances. It was just that final moment.
Naismith considered that referee Kevin Clancy’s penalty for Will Fish’s foul on Kenneth Vargas was correct.
Some fans even threw a pair of Apple AirPods at Shankland, which seemed to unnerve the forward.
He was also seen holding a lighter, and Naismith claimed that “some idiots are going to ruin the party for everyone.”
“I was pretty sure when it came on the screen that we would still get penalized, if I’m honest,” he added.
“I felt like Kenneth got enough of the ball for it to be a foul, but if they didn’t give it to him, I didn’t think you’d have any arguments either.”
Hibs boss Nick Montgomery felt his team should have left Tynecastle with a win.
“It’s a sign of the team I’ve put together, with some help in the window,” he said of the display.
‘Momentum has been growing in recent weeks.
“I thought we were brilliant tonight, I thought we deserved the three points.”
