German legend Lothar Matthaus believes that Xabi Alonso will reject all offers this summer to stay at Bayer Leverkusen.

Alonso has won admirers for his extraordinary work with the Bundesliga side, taking them from their relegation-threatened position last season to eight points clear at the top of the German top flight.

The former Liverpool star aims to guide Leverkusen to their first Bundesliga title, while they are also in the semi-finals of the German Cup and the last 16 of the Europa League, having endured the first seven months of the campaign without failure.

His incredible form has seen Alonso linked with jobs at Liverpool and Bayern, which will become available at the end of the term when Thomas Tuchel leaves, while there is still speculation he could move to another of his former clubs, Real Madrid.

But Matthaus is convinced the 42-year-old will choose to stick it out at the BayArena next season.

“His dream may be to one day coach Bayern, Liverpool or Real Madrid,” he said. “But, in my opinion, he is not finished at Leverkusen yet. Xabi is not someone who gets carried away by the big names, he has celebrated too many successes as a player for that.

‘He, furthermore, is not going to be guided by the economic aspect. What matters to him is what he has built and who he has built it with. He knows where he comes from and what he owes to others. That’s why I don’t think he’s going to sign for another club next season.”

Alonso has been disciplined in refusing to answer questions about his future as the end of the campaign draws ever closer. Before that, he has his sights set on his first trophies as a manager to add to the haul he won during his playing days with the likes of the three European giants now chasing his signature.

Matthaus, who made more than 400 appearances for Munich, ultimately hopes the former midfielder chooses the Bavarian giants, insisting Alonso is a perfect fit for the club.

“I can’t think of any coach in Europe or in the world who suits Bayern Munich better than Xabi Alonso,” he added. “But Alonso is focused on Bayer Leverkusen and I think that’s good.

‘(He) is still not interested in Bayern Munich, Liverpool or Real Madrid. He is only interested in winning three titles with Leverkusen in the next two and a half months.

‘As I was a player, now it’s the same as a coach. He is true to his character. The stories that are unfolding now and in the coming weeks and months don’t matter to him. He has no pressure and can take things easy.’
