Mets' Pete Alonso asks if he can get Sunday roast in London on a day besides Sunday

If Pete Alonso seems a little sleepy when the New York Mets take on the Philadelphia Phillies in this weekend’s two-game MLB London Series, he might be coming back from a food coma after trying some of the best foods and drinks that the city has to offer. .

As he met with reporters Friday after the team’s workout, Alonso had more on his mind than facing the first-place Phillies and scheduled starting pitchers Ranger Suarez and Taijuan Walker. The All-Star first baseman, who leads the Mets with 14 home runs, wanted to make sure he got a taste of some of London’s best home runs before catching the plane back to New York.

After enjoying “a nice pint of Guinness” in a pub for a team dinner the night before, Alonso asked reporters if he could find a traditional Sunday roast on a Friday or Saturday.

“Unfortunately we’re leaving on Sunday, so I know Sunday roasts are a thing,” Alonso said. “Are they specifically served on Sundays in some places or can you get them anytime, like a London roast? And what’s your best recommendation?”

The consensus was that Alonso could find a Sunday roast any time he wanted, but one journalist suggested “eating as much sauce as possible”.

“I think you can get one pretty much any time,” one reporter responded, sounding a little unsure, though he stressed to Alonso, “All I would say is eat as much sauce as possible.”

The assembled media provided several suggestions. for the best place to get the meal of roast beef, lamb, chicken or pork with Yorkshire pudding, potatoes and roast vegetables, along with the aforementioned gravy.

Perhaps overwhelmed, Alonso then asked where to get the best fish and chips, about which the journalists had many opinions. Someone bailed him out by asking if he would eat mushy peas during his visit.

“Yes, if that exists, yes, of course,” Alonso said, and his apparent reluctance provoked a laugh.

Reporters were much more definitive when teammate Sean Manaea asked for chocolate suggestions and was emphatically told that Cadbury chocolate was better than Hershey’s.

Chocolate-free snack options should include Monster Munch and fruit pastilles, according to the British press. So keep an eye out for anyone in the Mets dugout or bullpen this weekend. At least some of those players have food on their heads.
