Meanwhile, the fanbase had previously heard rumors that this project would become a reality, and they were right that Nicolas was looking forward to reprising this beloved role again.
“It’s no secret that I love the character,” he said. Collider in March. ‘I think the character provides another kind of combination. I can offer my favorite performances from the Golden Age, that is: Robinson, Cagney, Bogart, with a character that, I suppose, is widely considered Stanley’s masterpiece.’
The Golden Globe winner added: “I see it as a kind of foray into a mix of pop art.” A kind of youthful mix between Bogart and Cagney.
The Golden Globe winner reflected on his infamous line in 2004’s National Treasure, in which his character says, “I’m going to steal the Declaration of Independence.” Nicolas noted: “What I really like about that scene, watching it again for the first time in many years, is that I like the positivity of the character.”
However, Nicolas recently reflected on another of his famous roles throughout his decades-long acting career: 2004’s National Treasure.
After rewatching the scene in which his character Benjamin Gates, a treasure hunter and cryptographer, says, “I’m going to steal the Declaration of Independence,” the star opened up about his iconic line.
‘How do you take something that is so profoundly ridiculous and actually try to sell it?’ asked vanity fair in 2023. ‘I’m going to steal the Declaration of Independence,’ ‘What I really like about that scene, watching it again for the first time in many years, is that I like the positivity of the character. He really believes this. He really reveres it. I think that’s lovely.’
But Nicolas is well aware of the impact the line has had over the last 20 years.
“I can’t even say it without laughing,” he continued of the infamous line. ‘It has been a meme many times. It’s been SNL. But you can’t help but laugh! “I think what makes it work is how seriously Justin (Bartha) and I take it.”
Nicolas added: “If you play it for laughs, then it’s a crazy, stupid comedy and it’s not my thing.” That’s not where I am. The fact that we had played it as dramatic actors makes it even funnier than it would have been if it were slapstick.’
