‘And the world moved forward fortunately… I mean actually, I have two young people, I don’t know if the world has probably moved forward enough.

“I don’t know, we didn’t have social media in those days and I’m not sure, there are many reasons why we wouldn’t be able to do it now.”

Caroline said on the latest edition of the Off Air podcast that the comedy’s vulgar ’90s humor wouldn’t be felt right now.

But he admitted that many viewers found it funny at the time, and some still do.

And she added: ‘I was always a fighter. I was fighting in the rehearsal room. I remember saying when we did the first pilot, very loudly, ‘I’m not here to serve and feed lines to men, I’m just not here to do that.’

“Which was pretty bold given that no one knew who I was or cared, but then I felt very strongly that there was actually an opportunity on that stage to give women a voice.

“It was never going to be as strong of a voice, but at least it could be just as funny, and actually what’s really interesting about comedies, I think, is that if you’re funny you can say almost anything.

“But if you’re just someone giving lines to someone else, you don’t exist, and I think that’s still true today.”

In 2022, Martin Clunes ruled out another series of Men Behaving Badly, agreeing that he would not be able to return “these days”.

The 60-year-old found fame as Gary Strang, opposite Neil Morrissey’s Tony Smart in the comedy ‘laddish’, which began on ITV in 1992 and moved to the BBC for four years from 1994.

The pair played housemates who drink, watch TV and chase women.

But Martin said another series would not be possible at present because of the conversations the friends had.

‘God no. Not these days. “I mean, we talk about things like Kylie Minogue’s butt and compare it to a racehorse,” he told Saga magazine.

‘How could we do that now?’
