She is about to appear in several daring scenes in the upcoming series of Bridgerton, the hit Netflix series.
But actress Nicola Coughlan says fans of Regency-era drama who think attitudes towards women and their sexuality have come a long way since the early 19th century are wrong. In fact, she says, women are judged more than ever.
“It’s more insidious now,” he said. ‘Men can sleep with as many women as they want, but women can’t do the same. It’s not seen as a level playing field.’
Coughlan, 37, who plays Penelope Featherington, was asked if the drama set between 1813 and 1827 has any relevance today.
She said: “We like to think we’re very liberal and open, but I think the world is still far more judgmental of women who have agency with their sexuality than it is of men.”

The new series will follow the characters Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton, depicted in a scene from the series, and their relationship.
She told Radio Times: ‘Penelope is also the most modern heroine we’ve ever had because she doesn’t just want marriage and love: she also wants a career.
‘Everyone can identify with the love story, but for women it is difficult to have it all. You shouldn’t be ashamed that you want it all.
The third series of Bridgerton, starting on May 16, will see Miss Featherington pursue Colin Bridgerton, played by 31-year-old Luke Newton.
The pair have said they appear in several intimate scenes and Coughlan has previously revealed that he found it “scary” to take on the role.
In March, the actress, known for her role in Channel 4’s Derry Girls, said she would not watch the racy drama with her mother.
She told Ireland’s Six O’Clock Show: “Watch it with your mum if you want, I won’t watch it with mine.” I’ll have to get him a separate Netflix account.
