Yobs across the country have clashed with riot police and launched fireworks at emergency service workers, amid a sharp rise in Bonfire Night trouble.

In Manchester, a large group of young people in the street threw fireworks at police.

A large mob of between 20 and 30 teenagers are believed to have built a “barricade” on Vine Street in Gorton using wooden pallets and mattresses.

They lit an illegal bonfire before launching fireworks towards police officers and passing cars in scenes of disorder. Tactical aid officers and fire crews arrived at the scene around 6 p.m.

Two arrests were made for crimes against public order. Images from the scene showed several police vans present in an attempt to control the situation, disperse the crowd and put out the illegal bonfire.

Several innocent drivers are believed to have been caught in the crossfire when flares were lit and thrown towards police vans on Tuesday night.

It comes as emergency services were put on high alert over Halloween and Bonfire Night, with police and fire crews on hand to tackle incidents of anti-social behavior breaking out across the region.

Officers were said to be patrolling in “critical areas” to address issues such as nuisance fireworks, fires and crowds. Specialized resources are also available for deployment.

Earlier, Superintendent John-Paul Ruffle, head of the anti-social force at Greater Manchester Police, said: “Simply put, we want to spread the message that we will not tolerate anti-social behaviour, and especially attacks or abuse against police workers. The emergency services simply do their job during this period.

“Anyone who behaves like this can expect the full force of the law to be brought to bear.”

“Anti-social behavior is not a minor crime – it can cause misery for people and we are absolutely committed to tackling it in any way we can.”
