Wayne Rooney has announced that he will be joining Gary Neville's YouTube channel, The Overlap.

Wayne Rooney has found a new team. Well, something like that.

The Manchester United and England hero joins The Overlap.

Rooney, 38, will star alongside the likes of Gary Neville, Roy Keane, Ian Wright, Jill Scott and Jamie Carragher in the channel’s range of YouTube content and podcasts.

Launched by Neville in 2021, The Overlap has become one of football’s most agenda-setting voices, landing exclusives with big names and covering all the big talking points every week.

“I’m excited to announce that I’ll be joining my good friend Gary Neville and the team at The Overlap to appear on the channel in some of their brilliant shows on YouTube and the podcast,” Rooney wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

“I can’t wait to get started.”

Football transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano even filmed a video announcing the signing, stating that Rooney will debut with The Overlap “very soon”.

As well as interviews, the channel publishes a variety of programs including The Breakdown, Fan Debate and Stick to Football, presented by Sky Bet.

Rooney is looking for new projects following his dismissal from Birmingham City in January.

His budding coaching career was also a success in the Midlands when he replaced John Eustace with the club in sixth place and left them in 20th place.

They have only won two of their 15 games in charge and are now in the relegation zone heading into the final game of the season.

It is clear that the United and England legend is eager to return to the dugout but, before doing so, Rooney has embarked on a number of projects.

Primarily, the 38-year-old has appeared as a pundit for multiple broadcasters including Sky Sports, TNT Sports and BBC One in recent months.

Rooney said he will appear on his YouTube shows and podcast.

The 38-year-old has been filling his time with various activities since being sacked by Birmingham in January.

He has been associated with savage contempt for experts.

Appearing recently on Sky Sports, Rooney told Virgil van Dijk and Liverpool to “move on” following their Merseyside derby defeat.

“Those Liverpool players should want to go tomorrow because when you lose a derby you want the games to come quickly,” he said.

“We’ve heard it many times this season with Liverpool around 12:30 kick-off. Keep going, that’s part of your job. They should be ready to play.”

Similarly, during his work as a pundit on United’s victory over Everton in March, he stated that he had no sympathy for Marcus Rashford’s struggles in the 2023-24 campaign.

Rooney told TNT Sports: “To be honest, not much.” He is in a privileged position because he plays for Man United.

“He’s the only player I think can achieve my scoring record. I hope he does, but he needs to get consistency. He’s not having the best of seasons, so he needs to find some form and become a leader.”

This month, Rooney was announced as the latest star signing for EA Sports FC Pro Club Girth N Turf, founded by YouTubers Angry Ginge and Yung Filly.

Rooney made his debut for the club, but it wasn’t his playing skills that caught the eye, or perhaps ears, during the live broadcast.

After playing, Rooney expressed his desire to play again in the future, saying: “If (sic) y’all want us back, I’ll be back.” Yung Filly answered yes immediately.

However, the 38-year-old was quickly met with a jibe from Angry Ginge, real name Morgan Burtwistle, who declared: “You can come back tomorrow, mate.” Don’t be shit again.

This prompted Rooney to respond with a light smack as he responded: ‘Ah, redhead!’

Just a week later, Rooney had his teammates laughing again after quickly reacting to a foul-mouthed comment in the livestream chat.

“For some reason, apparently they call me ‘you’re a fucking fat grandma,’ cheers dude,” said Angry Ginge. “Someone is obviously not very happy that Real Madrid won.”

Rooney quickly responded and the 38-year-old deadpanned: “I don’t think that was directed at you.”

He also refused to rule out joining KSI’s Misfits Boxing promotion after claiming that “a few” people had been in touch trying to get him in the ring.
