Oppenheimer may have won the most awards at last night’s Academy Awards, but the real big winner of the night seems to have been Ozempic.
Speculation was rife online about who may have taken the celebrity drug after a celebrity walked the red carpet looking noticeably slimmer.
Dr. Gary Motykie, a plastic surgeon-to-the-stars in Los Angeles, told DailyMail.com that the crowd appeared to be more ‘lean’ than in previous years.
The use of weight-loss drugs in Hollywood has become so widespread that Eli Lilly – the maker of Ozempic’s rival drug Mounjaro – released an ad this month asking people to stop using the drug for vanity.
Below are the celebrities who may have taken the drug:
Jesse Plemons
Jesse Plemons is pictured above in 2022 and again in 2024. In both photos he is attending the Academy Awards. The star has attributed her weight loss to intermittent fasting
Jesse Plemons looked unrecognizable on the red carpet with wife Kirsten Dunst last night.
Shocked people on social media said he ‘looked amazing’ and asked, is the rest of him?’ after seeing the amazing transformation.
The 35-year-old revealed he started trying to lose weight in 2022 after deciding he was ‘tired of carrying all that extra weight around’.
Dr. Motykie said he felt Plemon’s change in his waistline was likely due to the work he had put into changing his lifestyle.
Plemons has talked about using intermittent fasting, cutting back on carbs and avoiding ‘horrible’ foods.
Dr. Motykie said: ‘I really think it’s his lifestyle,’ he said, ‘because he’s very vocal about his lifestyle changes.
“And then, secondly, for a fairly consistent period over a long period of time — not just a month or two — he’s lost weight.
So it looks like he has committed to those lifestyle changes and you can really see it in his body. He’s got some tone on him so he’s probably putting in hard work in the gym instead of using semaglutide.’
America Ferrera
America Ferrera is pictured above in 2019 attending an Oscars after-party (left) and again at the Oscars this year in a Barbie pink dress
Another celebrity who has lost weight over the years is Ugly Betty star America Ferrara.
The 39-year-old has described her body as being ‘average size’ for years and even said she ‘unapologetically’ loves her figure.
She has attributed the recent changes in her waistline to her diet and exercise regime – and says she works out almost every day and holds dance parties at home with her children.
But Dr. Motykie said the lack of toning on her body – indicating a build-up of muscle mass – meant she might be on the drugs.
“We don’t see the same muscle mass and toning in her (as other celebrities),” he said, “just fat loss.”
“This makes me suspicious of the possible use of semaglutide or other weight loss drugs.”
She told People in 2022: ‘I love my body, I try (to exercise) once a day.
‘I think my relationship with moving my body and working out has really evolved and I’m in a place where I just want to enjoy it.
‘I want to have fun, I want to move because I can, because it feels good and because it always makes my day better when I’ve done it.’
The mother of three has not previously spoken about the use of weight loss medication.
Brendan Fraser
Brendan Fraser is pictured above in 2021 and at the Oscars last night. He has lost weight after his role in The Whale, where he played a 600-pound man
Rumors swirled online that Brendan Fraser may have used Ozempic to help himself lose weight.
One user wrote on X, ‘Brendan Fraser must be on that Ozempic’, while another said: ‘Ozempic made you look good Brendan.’
The 54-year-old – who has struggled with his weight – looked much slimmer than in 2021 shortly before his role as 600lb character Charlie in the award-winning film ‘The Whale’.
Dr. Motykie said that while he believes Fraser may have used Ozempic, he may also have gone off the drug before the Oscars.
He said: ‘There are several pictures of him (from before the Oscars) where he looks a lot leaner, kind of like an “Ozempic face” (- where the skin is loose),’ he said.
“But we can see here in this Oscar’s picture that he might have a little bit of a rebound and get a little bit of volume back.”
He added: “I haven’t seen any information about him talking about his training, diet, lifestyle changes – that’s why I’m a bit suspicious.”
He weighed around 300 pounds when The Whale was filmed in 2021 – with a fat suit used to add another 300 pounds to his frame.
The actor was pictured at the premiere of the film in 2023, albeit with a much slimmer figure.
Fraser struggled with depression in the 2000s and 2010s, as well as injuries that saw him undergo surgery on his spine, knees and vocal cords in 2013. The actor also split from ex-wife Afton Smith in 2009, adding to his problems.
Fraser says he aims to become more ‘comfortable’ in his frame than in previous years – like when he was in George of the Jungle or The Mummy.
He told People last year: ‘I mean, I’m older now: I don’t look like I did then, and I don’t necessarily want to.
‘But I have made peace with who I am now. And I’m happy that the work I can do is based on an emotional reality that is not my own life, but with which I can strongly identify.’
Emily Blunt
Emily Blunt (shown above at the Oscars in 2023 and this year) was the picture of elegance in her form-fitting gowns. Some fans suggested she might be on Ozempic
She always looks great – but some viewers pointed out that Emily Blunt appeared to be even smaller than usual.
One fan commented on X: ‘Did Ozempic get Emily Blunt too?’
Dr. However, Motykie said she had significant muscle mass, suggesting she had not used the drug.
He said: ‘I think she looks amazing.
“She maintains the same body frame, has the same tone to her and muscle mass – and so I think semaglutide is unlikely.”
Studies have shown that about 60 percent of the weight people lose while on Ozempic is muscle unless they make sure they keep exercising and eating a high protein diet.
Blunt has rarely spoken about her weight – but previously revealed that she had lost weight for her role in Devil Wears Prada (2006).
“I only lost weight for Devil Wears Prada and that was because my character was supposed to be on the edge of anorexia,” she said.
‘I come from a family with thin children, so I’ve always been ok with that.’
Lupita Nyong’o
Lupita Nyong’o is pictured above at a premiere in Mexico in 2022 and at the Oscars last night. Some fans noticed her slimmer figure
Another celebrity some fans suggested had been caught in Ozempic’s spotlight was 12 Years a Slave actress Lupita Nyong’o.
The star, 41, looked sensational in a glittering feather dress as she attended the awards in Hollywood, California, last night.
But a number commented on her changing frame, with one saying online: ‘Is Lupita on Ozempic?’ and another added: ‘I hope Aunt Lupita isn’t on that Ozempic’.
Dr. However, Motykie said her muscle mass made it less likely she was using Ozempic or a similar weight-loss drug.
Pointing out that her figure appeared more toned, he said: ‘When you look at her, she’s toned, she’s fit, she’s got muscle.
“Those things indicate that she is training and putting in the work and is not just “skinny”.
“When people take Ozempic, they don’t gain muscle, they actually lose muscle mass — which means they don’t have the fitness look you see with Lupita.”
Lupita hasn’t recently opened up about any weight loss — previously ruling out gaining up to 100 pounds for a movie role.
She split from her longtime partner Selema Masekela last October.
Melissa McCarthy
Melissa McCarthy is pictured above in 2022 and again in 2024. Fans commented on how she appeared to have a much slimmer figure
Fans have also pointed to Melissa McCarthy’s changing waistline as a sign that the star may be using Ozempic.
The 53-year-old Bridesmaids star has previously said she expects her weight to fluctuate for the rest of her life.
Dr. Motykie said he felt her shift was also likely due to lifestyle and dietary changes rather than weight loss medication.
She previously lost 70kg after going on an all-liquid diet for four months ahead of her role in Gilmore Girls.
She then lost around 75 pounds in 2016, attributing the shift at the time to ‘no trick, nothing to tell, just super boring life’.
She told EXTRA: “You do it right, you don’t do anything funny, and you go to bed at 7:30—that’s the trick.”
Lately, though, she says she’s taken a more laid-back approach to her figure.
“I finally said (to myself), ‘Oh, for God’s sake, don’t worry about it’ — and that might be the best thing I’ve ever done,” she said on CBS.
‘I really stopped worrying about my weight. I stopped overanalyzing, overthinking, doing too much… I just stopped constantly worrying about it.
‘I think there’s something about loosening up and not being so nervous and stiff about it, which bizarrely has worked.’
She has not previously mentioned the use of weight loss drugs.
Catherine O’Hara
Comedian and actress Catherine O’Hara turned heads at the 2022 and 2024 Oscars with her fashionable look
There were also suggestions last night that Home Alone star Catherine O’Hara may also have used Ozempic.
O’Hara has never mentioned using weight loss drugs and has said in the past that she actually aims to avoid getting work done as she gets older.
The 70-year-old told the Hollywood Reporter in 2022: ‘I’m a freak because I’ve never had anything done to my face.
‘I don’t want to have surgery and I don’t want to get needles, other than acupuncture needles.
‘I think we should embrace and respect age and love ourselves for it.’
But this did not stop speculation surfacing online that she had used weight loss drugs, with a fan posting her name on a celebrity thread on Ozempic.
Dr. Motykie said it was unlikely she used the drug, but said her frame still appeared toned.
There is concern about prescribing the drugs to older adults because they can cause a decrease in muscle mass, which can increase someone’s risk of falls and fractures.
But semaglutide is approved for use in adults over 65 years of age.
