Former NRL star turned commentator Braith Anasta has urged Nicho Hynes to reach out to Latrell Mitchell following a tumultuous month of football for the Cronulla Sharks scrum-half.

With the score tied 14-14 on Friday night, Hynes had a chance to clinch the win against Canterbury at Accor Stadium when the Sharks entered the red zone.

But the 28-year-old unleashed a shot from 18 metres out and straight in front.

To make matters worse, his rival Matt Burton was the hero of the Bulldogs’ 15-14 victory with his own long-range shot just a minute later.

Hynes’ glaring miss continued a bumpy few weeks for the 2022 Dally M medallist.

Hynes found himself dropped as New South Wales’ scrum-half following the opening match of the State of Origin series after struggling to rally the 12-man Blues into the contest at Accor Stadium on June 5.

In his first game after Origin I, Hynes missed a sideline conversion attempt that could have sent the Sharks into overtime against the Dolphins, who instead escaped with a 30-28 victory.

Hynes has been open about his mental health issues in the past, and Anasta believes he would benefit from speaking to Latrell Mitchell about dealing with adversity.

The Souths star has had a tough 2024 season but has bounced back in fine style, helping the Blues demolish Queensland at the MCG to take the Origin series to a decider in Brisbane.

“Latrell has been there. Give him a call,” Anasta said on NRL 360 on Monday night.

“Honestly, look where he came from two or three months ago.”

In a recent interview with Channel 9, Mitchell spoke about the toll that drama and constant criticism have taken on her this year.

“I feel like a lot of people hate me and don’t know me,” she said on the Sunday Footy Show.

‘A lot of people hate me for making myself the villain all the time, so I tend to close the doors on who I am as a person.

‘This is how I am right now because this is how I have been screwed in the past, but I have learned a lot from those situations when I was young and from being taken advantage of.

‘The way I act on the pitch reflects a bit of the frustration I feel off it. Acting like that is not the way to play football. It’s not the sport I like.

“These brief outbursts of anger are not like me. They are the ones that accumulate over time, over the course of a week, a month or a year, when people constantly attack me.”

In response to criticism from media pundits, Mitchell issued a six-word message.

“If the media would just shut up and let me play, there wouldn’t be any controversy,” he said. “Honestly, if they would just shut up and let me play, there wouldn’t be any controversy.”
