Florida Governor Ron DeSantis earned laughter from Donald Trump and massive applause during his “unity” speech on the second day of the Republican National Convention.
Trump’s former 2024 rival said the US cannot afford another term with the country run like a weekend at Bernie’s, referencing the movie in which a task force turns their deceased boss into a puppet to pretend he’s still alive.
“Let’s send Joe Biden back to his basement and send Donald Trump back to the White House!” DeSantis said at the start of his speech at the Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on Tuesday.
DeSantis joins other Republicans who do not believe President Joe Biden is fit to run the country, saying he is not mentally or physically fit for another term in office.
Florida’s governor spoke at the convention after remarks by fellow Republican primary candidate Nikki Haley. Both appeared at the request of Trump, who wanted to show unity within the Republican Party after officially becoming the candidate for the November elections, just two days after an assassination attempt.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis made Donald Trump laugh during his remarks on the second day of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on Tuesday.
“Our country was respected when Donald Trump was our commander in chief,” DeSantis said. “Joe Biden has failed this nation.”
“As a citizen, as a husband, and as a father, I am alarmed that the current president of the United States lacks the ability to carry out the duties of his office,” he said. “Our enemies do not limit their plans to the hours between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. We need a commander in chief who can lead 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”
DeSantis added the joke: “America cannot afford four more years of a weekend under a Bernie presidency.”
Trump, appearing on the giant screen at the Fiserv Forum, chuckled at DeSantis’ joke with a flat smile.
“That’s great,” he seemed to say.
“Let’s be honest,” Desantis continued. “Biden is just a figurehead. He’s a tool to impose a leftist agenda on the American people.”

Just like in the movie, MAGA Republicans claim Biden is a “puppet” of those who really run the country behind the scenes.
DeSantis and Trump have had a rocky relationship over the years.
It was Trump who helped propel DeSantis to fame and secure his first primary victory that led to his becoming governor of Florida in 2018.
But when Trump made clear that it would be a “betrayal” for DeSantis to run against him in the Republican primary, the governor still launched his candidacy.
Now, after dropping out of the race ahead of New Hampshire’s primary election day, DeSantis is back on Trump’s team and endorsing his presidential bid.
