Savvy shoppers know that Amazon Prime Day is often the best time to score a deal on a new Fire tablet or streaming device. Top 5 Deals on Amazon Devices
I was Team Paperback until I tried my first Kindle, and now I can’t get it out of my hands. The Paperwhite is the top of the Kindle line and our favorite e-reader overall. You have to pay $20 more to get rid of the ads on the lock screen, but they don’t interfere with reading if you don’t want to spend extra. There are two main versions: this basic Paperwhite and a Signature Edition (8/10, WIRED recommends), which comes with 32GB of storage up to 16GB, wireless charging, and an auto-adjusting backlight. There’s also a children’s version With a case, a one-year subscription to Amazon Kids+and a two-year, no-questions-asked replacement warranty. The Paperwhite hasn’t been updated since 2021 and we’re not sure when a new one will arrive, but mine is still working like the first day. We think it’s still safe to buy one.
The Paperwhite is best for reading. The Scribe (8/10, WIRED recommends), with its 10.2-inch screen, is also designed for writing and drawing. It’s a Kindle at its core, so reading is fluid and there’s no lag while writing. Professional artists will want something better, but it’s a natural fit. However, the Scribe is very expensive, and the price tag is very high. Premium Pencil Versionwith its eraser on one end, costs another $30. You can’t write directly on the pages of the book, as Kindle opts for sticky notes, and it’s not waterproof.
We generally prefer Roku streaming devices, but if you tend to watch a lot of Amazon Prime content, get the Fire TV Stick 4K Max. Anyone can use it, of course, but it obviously promotes a lot of Prime content. It has 16 gigabytes of storage, which should be enough for all your streaming apps and games. You can tap into your security camera feed and ask Alexa to do things, like order you a pizza.
Amazon also has its own line of tablets, and in our guide, we specifically recommend against buying one unless it’s Prime Day. The Fire tablets are mostly bad, but if all you plan to do is watch Amazon content and perform basic work tasks like email, they’re reasonably capable and awfully affordable. The Fire HD 10 is our favorite of the bunch, with a 1080p display and 3 gigabytes of RAM so you can watch videos and browse a bunch of tabs. As with the Kindles, you have to pay an extra $15 to get rid of the ads on the lock screen. There are 32GB and 64GB models available.
Amazon’s Echo Show 8 has been our favorite Alexa-enabled smart display for several generations, and the 2023 version is another winner. It slots neatly between the diminutive five-inch Show 5 and the jumbo-sized Show 10, providing an attractive display that’s big enough for easy interaction without taking up too much desk space. You can check the weather, video chat, add up to three informational widgets, and much more, all with Alexa ready to help. It’s a little pricey at full price, but this deal makes the Show 8 really appealing to anyone looking for a smart assistant that does a little bit of everything.Ryan Waniata
