It’s reliable (the unit I bought in 2018 still works perfectly today), easy to master, and feature-rich. Place freshly roasted coffee beans into the hopper and adjust the grind setting. Pull out the magnetic tamper and gently press it onto the portafilter. Attach the portafilter and press a button—you’ve now made an espresso (as long as the pressure gauge indicated the pressure was in the “espresso range.” Use the steam wand to heat up some milk if you want a latte. It’s a classic, but as the saying goes, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Oxo’s cold brew coffee maker (8/10, WIRED recommends) brews delicious, low-acid coffee with a system that seems a little intimidating at first, but is easy to master. does It takes up more space than other cold brew systems, but you can cut that in half. You can use paper or metal filters, and since it’s a 32-ounce coffee maker, you won’t be brewing just one cup at a time. The carafe that comes with it is labeled with all the necessary measurements in case you need them.
The original AeroPress was the closest thing to a perfect coffee-making device: a palm-sized syringe you can take anywhere that makes delicious coffee with ease and is also easy to clean. The AeroPress XL is more of the same — literally. It’s the same device, just twice the size of everything — plunger, chamber, lid, filter, and stirrer — and it also comes with a carafe. Admittedly, we’re not exactly sure who the AeroPress XL is for. There are probably easier ways to brew twice as much coffee, and pouring a pint of boiling water into a chamber balanced over a carafe sounds like it could end badly. However, if you’ve been waiting for an upgrade from your original AeroPress forever and you drink twice as much coffee as you did before, the 43 percent discount seems like a steal.
