Toni Kroos is reportedly in line to seal a one-year contract extension with Real Madrid.

His current contract expires this summer, but his employers are so impressed with his performance that they are willing to keep him until at least 2025.

Kroos, 34, has played in all but three of Madrid’s games this season and is a stable midfield presence for the younger players to learn from.

He announced a surprise return to the German national team in February and this month made his first international appearances in almost three years, including as team captain.

Madrid has spoken with him about a new agreement and is willing to accept it, although signing it is only a formality, according to reports Fabrizio Romano.

This comes as a big surprise considering that as recently as March 19 he left his future open for debate.

‘Many things are not clear about what will happen after the Euro. I don’t even have a contract with the club for next season yet. I’d have to clear that up first,’ he said.

However, he did the same last year, only signing an extension until this summer.

In a Real Madrid that is nurturing some of football’s brightest young talents (Jude Bellingham, Vinicius Jr., Eduardo Camavinga, Aurelien Tchouameni and Arda Guler), Kroos’ experience is incredibly valuable for Los Blancos.

While he plays a central midfield role and often sits deeper than his counterparts, he has contributed seven assists.

In the summer he will complete a decade of service at the Santiago Bernabéu and hopes to add four Champions League titles and three LaLiga titles before his anniversary.

His trophy-laden spell has seen him feature 455 times for the Spanish superclub and another season could see him reach the magical 500, a club that only 15 players belong to, including current star Luka Modric.

Almost 1,000 days after retiring from international football, Kroos returned to Germany’s starting eleven against France and then the Netherlands.

His consistency is a great advantage for both Madrid and Germany, who offer him a way to win more trophies.

He was integral to their 2014 World Cup victory but has insisted he is not a “savior” figure for a team that has underperformed in recent major tournaments.

Germany exited the 2018 and 2022 World Cups in the group stage and only reached the round of 16 of Euro 2020.

That being said, two assists and two wins in his return certainly show promise. He even wore the captain’s armband against Holland.

A last chance at glory in his homeland – and indeed in Madrid – would be appropriate chapters towards the end of an iconic career, which has seen Kroos emerge as one of the best of his generation.
