It was a running joke all week at Augusta: Only one person, people said, could stop Scottie Scheffler’s march toward a second green jacket: his wife Meredith.
At this year’s Masters, no one in the field found a way to match the world number one as he cruised to a four-stroke victory on Sunday.
However, during the four days there was a chance that Scheffler would be dragged back home because he and Meredith were expecting their first child, imminently.
It is not surprising, then, that once the formalities were completed and Scheffler had put on his green jacket, he told his wife: “I’m coming home.”
‘I’ll be home as quickly as I can. I love you and I’m coming home!’ he continued.

Scheffler put on his green jacket and then declared, “I’ll be home as soon as possible.”
The world number one had made it clear that he would have left Augusta to be by her side, even as he approached the green jacket and the $3.6 million prize.
It was a sign of the bond between the couple, who were teenage sweethearts before getting married in 2020.
Before Sunday’s final round, the pair spoke, with Scheffler later revealing, “She just asked me if she could pray for me…my neck was bothering me.” I asked him to pray for some healing.’
He added: “Marriage has been such a tremendous aspect of my life that I can’t even imagine what it will be like to be a father.”
Currently, Meredith (née Scudder) works for a non-profit organization, raising funds and awareness for childhood cancer.
But she was just a teenager when she met Scheffler, who was born in New Jersey before moving to Dallas as a child.
Scottie played golf at the University of Texas while Meredith was a student at Texas A&M University.
The couple stayed together despite attending different universities: Scottie played golf at the University of Texas from 2014 to 2018, while Meredith studied two hours away at Texas A&M University.
She left College Station with a bachelor’s degree in communications in 2018, the same year the couple got engaged.
‘YEAH! “I can’t believe God gave me my best friend to spend the rest of my life with,” Meredith wrote on social media.
I can’t wait to be your wife, Scottie! Impressed by the Lord’s faithfulness and goodness toward us. (LET’S DO IT!’
When they married at Arlington Hall in Dallas in 2020, the couple had been dating for six years.
“I can’t believe God gave me my best friend to spend the rest of my life with,” he once said.
Meredith has been at Scheffler’s side throughout the golfer’s remarkable rise to number one in the world. He caddied for him at the 2022 Masters, before appearing on the green after his first win at Augusta.
Meredith was also photographed alongside Scheffler after his win at last month’s Players Championship, despite being heavily pregnant, and has been there to comfort him through his few dark moments.
Photos showed Meredith hugging Scheffler after he lost in last year’s Ryder Cup.
“Meredith obviously knows me better than anyone, being my wife,” he told Golf.com. “She knows how hard it is when she doesn’t win.”
Fortunately, that doesn’t happen too often.
