Major repair work is underway at the MCG after Taylor Swift’s world tour arrived in Melbourne.

The American superstar performed three concerts at the 100,000-seat stadium in Australia last week, where nearly 300,000 fans visited the venue and footage has shown the detrimental impact it has had on the turf.

The new AFL season starts next month, but MCG bosses are well equipped to tackle major resurfacing jobs – they’ve re-turfed just 13 days before the start of the 2023 season after back-to-back Ed concerts Sheeran.

“With just under four weeks until the first AFL match of the 2024 season, our turf team has been preparing for the stadium renovation for the past 18 months,” Melbourne Cricket Club boss Stuart Fox said. to News Corp.

‘The team has a proven track record in managing significant and successful turf renovations, which was evident following last year’s two Ed Sheeran concerts, where we faced tighter deadlines to be ready for the AFL season.

‘Although we need to replace two-thirds of the grass, the absence of scheduled events after the three Taylor Swift concerts gives us a more generous window for response time.

‘Our grass rolls, with a depth of about 10 cm, are practically immovable once laid. With the combination of our skilled team, months of preparation and advanced technology, I have every confidence that the sacred turf will reach the elite standards expected of us by mid-March.”

According to Channel Seven, it will probably take 12 days to completely replace the grass.

The first match of the season to take place at the MCG will be played on Thursday night in the first round, which is just over three weeks away.

P!nk will also perform at Marvel Stadium on March 12 and 13, meaning a quick turnaround is needed for the venue’s first AFL game on March 29.
