EXCLUSIVE
A physical education teacher accused of sexually abusing a student was seen living under strict bail conditions that prohibit her from leaving home without her parents.
Tayla Brailey, 30, was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly sexually assaulting a 17-year-old boy she taught at Lurnea High School in south-west Sydney.
Eight days after her arrest, she was spotted in Wollongong on Wednesday, looking sad as she visited a cafe in Kieraville with her parents, where they met her sister.
He was wearing a hoodie promoting mental health awareness that read, “Brothers don’t let brothers fight alone.”
The hoodie is a product of local suicide prevention charity Talk2MeBro, a cause his family has supported on social media for years.
The Wollongong-based charity was invited to speak to students at Lurnea High School in October 2020. Brailey wrote on Instagram at the time: “It was amazing having you today! Thanks again for the amazing presentation!”
Under bail conditions, Brailey must live with her mother and father, can only leave the house if accompanied by her parents, must observe a nightly curfew and must surrender her passport.
Tayla Brailey, 30, was seen in Wollongong a week after she was granted bail.
The newly married physical education teacher was arrested last week after allegedly sexually abusing a student.
He is also prohibited from accessing social media, entering Lurnea, communicating with his alleged victim or any prosecution witness, being in any educational facility or being in the presence of a minor unless the child is in the company of a parent or guardian.
He must also make three weekly visits to Wollongong Police Station.
Brailey, who married in September, is accused of sexually abusing a boy on three occasions in July, including at his West Wollongong home and in a car in Lurnea.
Brailey is seen leaving the cafe after having breakfast with members of his family.
He was wearing a hoodie from a suicide prevention charity.
Brailey was released on bail a week ago under strict conditions, including a curfew and not being allowed to leave her parents’ home unless accompanied by her mother or father.
Police will allege she began talking to the boy after he added her on Snapchat, before the pair began exchanging sexually explicit videos.
According to documents cited in court last week, police will allege that a friend who accompanied his alleged victim to her home in mid-July walked in at a time when she was performing a sexual act on him.
Police will also allege she had sex with the boy in a car after he sneaked out of school to meet her before she went to a pharmacy to buy the morning-after pill.
Brailey married her partner in September last year after getting engaged in December 2021.
According to the documents, police will allege she became “hysterical” and admitted things to officers when they confronted her at school last week with the allegations.
The court heard he also allegedly admitted to speaking to two other students on social media.
Brailey was charged with sexual contact, sexual intercourse with a person under her care and aggravated sexual assault, and spent the night locked up at the Amber Laurel Correctional Center before being granted bail last Wednesday.
His next case is due to appear before Liverpool Local Court on 2 October.
