Australians have been warned to prepare for rain, hail and snow as a series of cold fronts move through south-eastern regions.
Slightly warmer temperatures and northerly winds will be replaced by a cold front that will reach the eastern states later on Friday, bringing rain and significantly cooler temperatures.
Miriam Bradbury, senior meteorologist at the Bureau of Meteorology, said: “Cooler air will move in towards the end of Saturday and into Sunday, and we will see a significant drop in temperature across the south-eastern states between Friday or Saturday and Sunday.”
Colder air will arrive in Sydney on Sunday, bringing a significant drop in temperatures.
“In addition to the lower temperatures, the wind chill factor and continued rainfall will make the wind chill factor even lower than the actual temperature,” Bradbury said.
Ms Bradbury said colder air and lower temperatures would cause snow levels to drop over the next few days.
Snow could fall as low as 400 metres in Tasmania and 600-700 metres on the mainland, but it will not be as heavy as last week’s snowfall.
The rain will begin to ease later on Saturday and Sunday.
A cold front will move into the eastern states later on Friday, bringing rain and much cooler temperatures through the weekend.
Fortunately, the rains will begin to taper off late Saturday and Sunday.
