Shocking images have emerged of a man confronted by police (pictured) after he allegedly stabbed a police officer near the Anzac Memorial, in Sydney’s Hyde Park, on Sunday afternoon.
An officer was heard yelling at the man to drop the knife.
‘Put down the knife. Leave it,” he ordered.
The officer and his colleague warned the man several times to drop the weapon, while they approached him while maintaining their distance.
Officers chased the man before one used a Taser to subdue him.
He was arrested on the corner of Bathurst and Elizabeth streets a short time later.
The man wearing a sweatshirt and gray pants was surrounded by police and paramedics.
Dozens of officers swarmed the busy strip before several roads were closed while a police operation was carried out.
The roads were later reopened and police reported that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
The man (pictured) was later arrested and surrounded by several police officers and paramedics, while a police operation was carried out in the area.
The injured officer and a female colleague were monitoring traffic at the busy police station when the alleged attack unfolded. Daily Telegraph reported.
A witness previously told Daily Mail Australia the chaotic scene was “well under control” after plainclothes police arrived in unmarked cars and officers arrived in two riot squad vans.
While the man was being arrested by police, the officer allegedly attacked was being treated by his colleagues, who wrapped the injured areas with bandages.
His alleged attacker was still armed when he was arrested.
“He still had the knife in his hand and was demanding the police shoot him,” New South Wales Police Detective Superintendent Martin Fileman later told reporters.
The man allegedly stabbed the police officer up to three times with a kitchen knife (in the center of the photo), about 30 cm long.
Dozens of police and emergency services personnel rushed to the scene (pictured), before roads were blocked.
Superintendent Fileman said the man did not say anything to officers when he approached them, before the alleged attack occurred.
He said police know the man from previous matters.
“There is no history of mental illness in our database,” Superintendent Fileman added.
NSW Police Minister Yasmin Catley was disappointed to learn that a police officer had been injured in the line of duty.
“My thoughts are with the injured officer and the entire police family after this shocking (alleged) attack,” he said.
‘Police work tirelessly and selflessly to serve and protect our community. They should never be met with violence. ‘
Police (pictured) have advised that there is no ongoing threat to the public and a second crime scene has been established at the intersection of Castlereagh and Park streets.
