George Gascón may be in his TikTok era, but his critics are less than impressed when they call for the “worst district attorney” to leave office.
The 70-year-old Los Angeles County district attorney is leaning into the popular Gen Z social media platform to appeal to young voters, who recently demanded he review the case of Erik and Lyle Menendez.
The Democrat, who is seeking re-election, excitedly jumped into Sabrina Carpenter’s Espresso while pretending to type on a Dell laptop.
“I’m working late because I’m a district attorney,” he articulated before the modified lyrics in the video.
She captioned the post: “You can’t spell DIVA without DA.”
‘This man needs to go!’ one TikToker wrote, while another called him the “worst DA ever.”
Not everyone was in a bad mood about the DA’s record, however, as one TikTok user commented: ‘Mr. Gascon!!! You know what we all want!!!!’
George Gascón is in his TikTok era! The 70-year-old Los Angeles County district attorney is leaning on the popular Gen Z social media platform to appeal to young voters, who recently demanded he review the case of Erik and Lyle Menendez.
“You can’t spell DIVA without DA.” The district attorney, who has been criticized for being “soft on crime,” even joined the “very conscious, very demure” trend last week, where he stressed to young voters that he “pays attention” to reproductive rights of women, wage theft, and more
And he sure does, since this is not the first time Gascón has participated in popular social media trends.
The district attorney, who has been criticized for being “soft on crime,” even joined the “very conscious, very demure” trend last week, where he stressed to young voters that he “pays attention” to reproductive rights of women, wage theft, and more.
‘See how I pay attention to kids in the juvenile system? Very conscious, very modest,” he said in the video.
Gascón has been criticized over the years for decisions related to juvenile crimes, especially the Hannah Tubbs case, which features a 26-year-old transgender child molester who was placed in a juvenile facility since the crime took place when She was a minor.
Gascón has admitted that Tubbs may have been given too lenient a sentence after he refused to prosecute her as an adult for the crime he committed as a minor.
She also participated in the ‘I Pay Attention to Things Most People Ignore’ trend, where she highlighted some of her platform’s values, including environmental justice, hate crimes, police accountability, and the death penalty.
Still, most of their fans seem not to care about those issues, as they only have one thing on their mind: freeing the Menendez brothers.
‘Please FREE THE MENÉNDEZ (brothers) and you will get my vote!’ wrote a TikTok user under one of his videos.
“Please release the Menendez brothers and they will have our votes again and again,” wrote another.
Many of Gascón’s followers seem especially interested in one topic: the release of the Menéndez brothers.
Free the boys!! Vote Gascón (sic)’, wrote a third.
“FREE THEM, I BEG YOU,” wrote a woman named Nicole.
‘Reexamine the Menéndez case and do justice for the children. Very conscious, very modest,” wrote another.
A woman named Mikayla Rose hoped the brothers would also be freed, but she hoped Gascón wasn’t using them as pieces in a political game.
‘If you don’t win, I really hope that doesn’t affect your decision about siblings. They deserved better than to be pawns in a political game. Please do the right thing and release them,” he wrote.
One user even accused Gascón of revisiting the Menéndez case simply to shore up his vote count for re-election.
‘It seems that George Gascón is using the Menéndez case, manipulating public opinion with the aim of winning re-election. Why don’t you decide now? Why wait to evaluate after the election?
Others, however, were simply happy to show their support for the DA, with one writing: ‘Diva, if I lived in Cali you’d have my vote!’
DailyMail.com has contacted Gascón’s office for comment.
Another wrote: “We believe in you and know we can count on you 100%.”
A third simply wrote: ‘Come on sir!’
Gascón recently revealed explosive new evidence that could free the Menéndez brothers as the family prepares to hold a press conference.
Gascón publicly posted on Instagram a screenshot of a letter written by Erik Menéndez to his cousin, Andy Cano, alluding to severe and prolonged abuse at the hands of his father José.
Gascón recently revealed explosive new evidence that could free the Menéndez brothers as the family is set to hold a press conference.
Gascón publicly posted on Instagram a screenshot of a letter written by Erik Menéndez to his cousin, Andy Cano, alluding to severe and prolonged abuse at the hands of his father José.
The letter, first revealed by DailyMail.com, was written eight months before his parents were killed.
He says, ‘I’ve been trying to avoid dad. It’s still happening to Andy, but it’s worse for me now. I can’t explain it. He’s so overweight I can’t stand to look at him. I never know when it’s going to happen and it’s driving me crazy.
Gascón later deleted the post from Instagram.
It comes as the Menendez family is scheduled to host a press conference in Los Angeles today, where celebrities including Rose O’Donnell will speak in “a powerful show of unity” for the siblings.
Other fans simply showed Gascón’s support in his new strategy on TikTok
Lyle and Erik Menendez were convicted of the murder of their parents, José and Kitty, in 1996 after their first trial was declared a mistrial. The brothers never denied killing their parents by shooting them 14 times with 12-gauge shotguns in their million-dollar home in Beverly Hills in August 1989, when they were just 18 and 21 years old.
But Lyle and Erik, now ages 53 and 56, claimed they acted in self-defense. They said they were victims of sexual abuse throughout their lives at the hands of their father, a high-profile businessman who worked in several industries.
The brothers have a hearing on November 29.
The Menéndez brothers are not the only high-profile case that Gascón’s office is re-evaluating as his re-election approaches.
His office is also reviewing new evidence against Marilyn Manson, accused by several women of sexual abuse.
“In recent weeks, new evidence has emerged that adds to an already extensive file submitted to our office by the LASD,” he said.
“It is our office’s responsibility to ensure that we have a complete picture of the admissible evidence available before making a filing decision.”
Gascón still trails former US Attorney General Nathan Hochman (pictured) in the polls. Gascón is 24 points behind Hochman and only 20 percent of likely voters plan to re-elect the DA
“Senior officials have met with the victims and our prosecutors continue to be in contact with the victims and their representatives throughout this process.”
Gascón said some of the alleged victims have asked to meet with him to discuss the case, but that would be inappropriate while it is still being investigated.
Instead, he would meet with them after deciding whether to press charges.
Despite trying to capitalize on big-name cases, Gascón still trails former U.S. Attorney General Nathan Hochman in polls, according to NBC Los Angeles.
Gascón is 24 points behind Hochman and only 20 percent of likely voters plan to re-elect the district attorney.
“The poll also shows that voters are concerned about crime, and those with concerns about crime are more likely to support Hochman,” USC professor Christian Grose told NBC Los Angeles.
DailyMail.com has contacted Hochman for comment.
