Scott McTominay scored the first goal of his Napoli career on Thursday night in a 5-0 win over Palermo in the Coppa Italia.

This was only the 27-year-old Scottish midfielder’s third appearance for Napoli since joining from Manchester United for £25.7million last month.

His goal came in the 77th minute after an assist from one of his former United teammates.

Romelu Lukaku, who was at Old Trafford between 2017 and 2019, showed impressive pace and strength to beat Pietro Ceccaroni, before pulling the ball back for McTominay to fire in from 10 yards.

McTominay had previously found the net 29 times in 255 appearances for United.

Palermo, now based in Serie B, were no match for Antonio Conte’s Scudetto hopefuls on Thursday.

The score was 2-0 after 12 minutes thanks to an early double from Cyril Ngonge.

Juan Jesús made it 3-0 at the end of the first half before Palermo’s Aljosa Vasic was sent off in the 58th minute.

David Neres then scored Napoli’s fourth of the night with 20 minutes remaining, shortly before Lukaku and McTominay came on as substitutes.

The former United duo were on the field for less than 60 seconds before combining for goal number 5.
