Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim has apologized for the “completely wrong” timing of his trip to London to speak to West Ham this week.
On Monday he flew to London to speak to the Hammers as they assess their options, with David Moyes’ future up in the air.
And Amorim was in the air soon after, flying back to Portugal and landing shortly after midnight on Tuesday, where a swarm of journalists bombarded him with questions.
Sporting are chasing the Portuguese title and can seal it with a win over second-placed Porto on Sunday night.
‘It was a mistake. “It wasn’t the right time,” Amorim admitted after flying in such a critical week.

Amorim was harassed by journalists with questions about his future after returning home
“I always ask my players to be respectful and I have not been, although I have informed the club before.”
“I am very sorry and I apologize to the fans, the club and the players.”
Amorim is a hero for Sporting and is on the verge of winning a second title in four seasons.
When he won the title in 2020/21, it was his first in almost 20 years.
He was the favorite for the Liverpool job after Xabi Alonso confirmed his intention to stay at Bayer Leverkusen, but their interest cooled and they have now agreed a compensation deal with Feyenoord for their coach Arne Slot. The package for Slot could reach £9.42 million.
David Moyes’ future is unclear despite his success at the London Stadium and West Ham’s open courtship of Amorim is a premonitory sign.
Caught in the middle of this is Moyes, who must wonder what else he has to do to fully win over the West Ham faithful.
It delivered them a Europa Conference League title last season and they are once again in contention for European football, having finished sixth, seventh and 14th in the last three campaigns.
