Following the news that Rory McIlroy has filed for divorce from Erica Stoll, the golfer’s failure to mention his wife of seven years during a Mother’s Day tribute days earlier seemed to be a sign of his fallout.
The documents were filed Monday, McIlroy’s team confirmed before the PGA Championship tournament in Louisville, Kentucky.
Prior to the performance, McIlroy won the Wells Fargo Championship in North Carolina. When the tournament concluded on US Mother’s Day, McIlroy praised his mother and left Stoll, the mother of his three-year-old daughter Poppy, out of the tribute.
“Yeah, my mom is amazing,” McIlroy said. “I think most people know my father, but my mother, Rosie, is kind of the rock or gel that holds our family together. She always has been.
“I’m probably a lot more like my dad, but sometimes I wish I was a little more like my mom,” she added. ‘So if you’re watching, mom, happy Mother’s Day! I can not wait to see you tomorrow.

McIlroy and Stoll married in 2017 and welcomed their daughter Poppy Kennedy in 2020.
The documents state that McIlroy and Stoll’s marriage had been “irretrievably broken.”
Their divorce petition reportedly indicates that the couple had signed a prenuptial agreement. The documents also call for joint custody and the establishment of a parenting plan for Poppy.
McIlroy and Stoll signed the prenup a month before their lavish wedding at Ashford Castle in April 2017. Seven years later, they asked for the prenup to be enforced as the marriage had “irretrievably broken down.”
The Northern Irishman’s lawyer is listed as Thomas Sasser, who represented Tiger Woods when he filed for divorce from Elin Nordegren in 2010.
McIlroy met Stoll during the 2012 Ryder Cup while working for the PGA as a transportation officer.
They maintained a platonic relationship while McIlroy dated tennis star Caroline Wozniacki. McIlroy and Wozniacki got engaged on New Year’s Eve 2013, but broke up a few months later. In late 2014, Stoll and McIlroy began dating.
The couple got engaged in December 2015 and had Poppy in August 2020.
Amid the divorce news, McIlroy is in Valhalla preparing for the PGA Championship, a tournament he won in 2012 and 2014. McIlroy will tee off at 8:15 a.m. Thursday alongside Dustin Johnson and Justin Rose.
