The Sunshine State will bear the brunt of a low pressure system that has formed in the Coral Sea, which will bring heavy rain across southeast Queensland for the rest of the weekend.

Rainfall totals of between 40 and 80 mm are expected across the region until Tuesday, with isolated rainfall of between 80 and 100 mm forecast.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued several flood warnings in Queensland and strong winds are expected to hit some parts of the region.

Up to 80mm of rain fell in the central Queensland cities of Rockhampton and Bundaberg from Saturday night to early Sunday morning.

Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Miriam Bradbury said wet weather would continue for the rest of Sunday across southeast Queensland.

“We will only see a change later on Sunday, when the wet weather begins to contract offshore, leaving some coastal showers early next week,” he said.

The wet weather will also flood parts of northern New South Wales with scattered rain persisting on Monday and Tuesday.

Several towns in northeastern New South Wales, including Ballina, Lismore and Tweed Heads, will brace for rainfall totals of 60 to 80mm from Anzac Day to May 1.

The Met Office has urged people in K’gari and the Sunshine Coast to stay out of the surf due to the strong sea conditions.

Rock fishermen have also been urged to heed wet weather warnings.
