Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will meet Colombian Invictus Games athletes in Bogota on the second day of their visit to South America.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were greeted by Colombia’s Vice President Francia Marquez and her husband Rafael Yerney Pinillo after arriving in the country on Thursday for the start of a four-day tour.

Ms Marquez, who said she was inspired to invite the Sussexes after their Netflix documentary, described the trip as a “very special visit” aimed at tackling cyberbullying and online discrimination, as well as promoting women’s leadership in Colombia.

Harry and Meghan were invited to Colombia for their quasi-royal tour after the country’s vice president saw them on Netflix and was “moved” by their story.

Francia Marquez made the revelation while briefing the media ahead of the arrival of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex for their four-day trip.

They will visit the cities of Bogotá before heading to Cartagena and Cali as part of a “cultural and social” visit.

Speaking to reporters, Ms Marquez, who continually referred to the couple as “Prince Harry and Meghan, Duke and Duchess of Sussex”, said she asked Meghan to visit Colombia last year but the visit had been delayed due to other commitments.

A local journalist asked Márquez, who has been accused of using helicopters as taxis, why she had invited the couple to Colombia.

She replied: “I learned about her story through Netflix and it touched me. Meghan is a woman who deserves to come to the country and tell her story.”

The forum was organised by the Duke’s Archewell Foundation.

The Duke of Sussex hit out at misinformation on social media during a summit on digital responsibility and appeared to blame fake news for sparking the disorder in Southport.

What happens online in a matter of minutes spills over into the streets. People act on information that is not true.

He added that many people were “scared and unsure” about the potential impact of AI and that “education and awareness” would be key to tackling misinformation.

X founder Elon Musk has come under intense criticism for misinformation on his platform relating to the events, with the world’s richest man even falling victim to it after sharing a false story about Sir Keir Starmer seeking detention camps for rioters.

It is up to all of us to distinguish between truth and falsehood. In an ideal world, those in positions of influence would take on more responsibility.

We no longer debate facts. As long as people are allowed to spread lies, insult and harass, social cohesion as we know it will have completely collapsed.

Prince Harry appeared to criticise Elon Musk following the Southport riots in Britain as he and wife Meghan Markle began their four-day quasi-royal tour of Colombia.

The Duke of Sussex hit out at misinformation on social media during a summit on digital responsibility and appeared to blame fake news for causing the mess.

Some 80 adults have so far been sentenced following violence that erupted in parts of the UK following the murder of three girls in Southport on 29 July.

And yesterday Harry told the audience: “What happens online in a matter of minutes is carried out onto the streets. People act on information that is not true.”

He added that many people were “scared and unsure” about the potential impact of AI and that “education and awareness” would be key to tackling misinformation.

Yesterday, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex arrived in Bogotá to begin their four-day visit to Colombia.

The couple will be welcomed by Colombian Vice President Francia Márquez, who invited them after watching the Netflix documentary Harry & Meghan.

Here’s what you need to know from day one:

  • Harry and Meghan spent the day visiting a school in the capital, Bogota, to speak to teenagers about the impact of social media.
  • In their second public appearance, Meghan and Harry attended a ceremony at the Delia Zapata National Arts Centre in Bogotá, where Meghan embraced artisanal design by wearing a floor-length gown by Colombian designer Johanna Ortiz.
  • The Duke and Duchess later spoke at a summit on digital responsibility organised in part by Harry and Meghan’s Archewell Foundation.
  • Over the next three days, the Sussexes will visit more of Bogota before heading to Cartagena and Cali as part of a “cultural and social” visit.
  • Harry will also meet with members of the Colombia team taking part in the Invictus Games, who are preparing for the 2025 games in Whistler, Canada.

Authorities have kept the itinerary a strict secret because there are areas of the country that are considered “best avoided” due to the current internal conflicts.
