She then admitted that while she did not plan to reveal anything, she confirmed that she was expecting a boy and spoke about her hopes that the campaign would improve her future.

Emily said: “I’m six months (pregnant) and I wasn’t going to say this, but I am going to say this: I’m having a boy.”

He added: “So I want him to be part of a really positive change and I want him to grow up knowing that he can talk openly about these things and enjoy his life.” I want him to be on the right side of history.’

Emily is backing a campaign by Right To Equality to toughen laws around sexual consent.

Affirmative consent means that “anything other than a clear, uncoerced, informed confirmation of consent as “yes” cannot be considered consent in the eyes of the law.”

This means that consent has to be a clear communication of willingness, rather than the absence of a “no”, and can be withdrawn at any time and not obtained through threats, force or coercion.

The change is expected to mean that the onus is less on the victim than the accused to prove that she did not consent, and will increase the surprisingly low number of rape convictions in the UK, which was just 2 per cent between 2021 and 2022.

Emily took to her Instagram on Monday to announce she was joining the campaign, with an image of her face beneath the words: “I’m asking for it.”

She wrote: ‘Ahead of this week’s International Women’s Day, I’m pleased to announce my latest campaign, working with Right to Equality to push for affirmative consent to be included in the law.

‘One in five think No can mean Yes when it comes to sex… this absolutely floored me.

‘We need to start asking for consent, and ask for it now. No more “implied consent”; only Yes should mean Yes. That’s the Affirmative Consent standard and I’m asking for it.’

On BBC Breakfast, Emily said: “I don’t see how anyone would find it exhausting to talk about that.” I think people are embarrassed to talk about it and now they’re like, “Oh, now I have to sign a contract before I get into a sexual scenario.”

“But the fact is, if you’re in a healthy sexual situation, simply making sure your partner is safe and comfortable will make the experience better on both counts.”

She continued: ‘We talk a lot about cultural impact. I think that in general women are not believed, our word is not believed.

“I think a change in the law will never be a perfect solution, but I think it starts a positive ripple effect of social change, which then creates a cultural change, which then changes mindsets.”

Emily added that sex education needed to be improved, adding: “I think it’s important for boys and girls to be together and talk about it together.

Emily added that sex education needed to be improved, insisting: “This is not a crusade to attack men, it’s something we need men and women to work on together.”

‘This is not a crusade to attack men, it is something we need men and women to work on together. And I think it starts with education. A good education backed by a change in the law is a start.’

It comes just weeks before Emily’s due date in April, after she said she feels “overwhelmed by the support” following her surprise pregnancy announcement.

The actress has known her boyfriend Alistair for almost three decades, as her mother Kate Robbins is the sister of Alistair’s stepmother, Jane Garner.

They were introduced after Emily’s aunt started dating Alistair’s father, Stephen Garner, in nightgowns before they married in 1994.

Alistair appears in a close-knit family photo in 2017 where he is surrounded by female members of Emily’s family and has his arm around the star’s sister Martha, while the caption reads: “He’s just one of the girls in reality”.

Emily, whose mother Kate is separated from her singer father Keith, is also close to her showbiz relatives, including Phoenix Night star uncle Ted Robbins and her other aunt, former soap actress Amy Robbins.

Emily and Alistair kept their relationship a secret for some time, but have grown closer over the past year and recently moved in together.
