Arsenal were eliminated from the Champions League after losing 3-2 on aggregate to Bayern Munich.

Arsenal crashed out of the Champions League at the hands of Bayern Munich on Wednesday night, when Joshua Kimmich’s second-half header gave the German giants a 3-2 aggregate victory at the Allianz Arena.

Bayern, who conceded the Bundesliga crown to Bayer Leverkusen this weekend after winning 11 consecutive top-flight titles, kept hopes of major trophies alive by booking their place in the Champions League semi-finals alongside his German compatriot Borussia Dortmund.

Arsenal fought hard after falling behind in the 63rd minute but struggled to create clear-cut chances as Mikel Arteta launched the likes of Leandro Trossard, Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah in search of an equaliser.

Here, Mail Sport’s ISAAN KHAN assesses both teams’ performances on a big Champions League night.

Bayern Munich (4-2-3-1)

Manuel Neuer – 6

He claimed crosses superbly throughout the game and made saves that he was expected to make. It wasn’t tested enough.

Joshua Kimmich – 7.5

He showed positivity to burst into the area and put Bayern ahead with an excellent header. That night he proved to be a key leader for Munich.

Matthijs De Ligt – 6.5

He defended brilliantly alongside his centre-back partner Dier to keep Arsenal’s chances to a minimum.

Eric Dier – 6.5

An organized and concentrated display against their former rivals. Tuchel’s trust in him was richly rewarded.

Noussair Mazraoui – 7

He kept Saka unusually calm, dealing magnificently with the England winger when he cut in with his left foot.

Leon Goretzka – 7

He was unlucky not to put Bayern ahead with a header off the post and worked tirelessly to keep Odegaard and Jorginho quiet. A mature and intelligent performance.

Konrad Laimer – 7.5

Frustrated Odegaard immensely with a tenacious display in midfield. He continued to chain Arsenal’s midfield even after receiving a booking.

Leroy Sané – 6

He looked dangerous in the first half but wasted a great opportunity at 1-0 to put the game out of Arsenal’s reach.

Jamal Musiala – 7.5

Bayern’s brightest spark of the night, dazzling Arsenal’s midfield with quick feet and complex passing. He should have made it 2-0 with a good chance near the end.

Rafael Guerreiro – 6

He produced a glorious cross for Kimmich’s first goal after a quiet first half down the left flank. He also had some weak moments while covering the injured Gnabry.

Harry Kane – 6.5

He had few scoring opportunities, but connected well with Musiala and Sane. He showed how he can still affect a game without clear opportunities.

Their defensive tactics were successful against Arsenal after conceding two goals in the first leg. He maintained control of possession without committing the players forward too much.

Arsenal (4-3-3)

David Raya – 6

He saved the post twice in the same play in the 47th minute. He is not to blame for the conceded goal.

Ben Blanco – 6

Composed defensively, but didn’t overlap much forward, something he is often so effective at.

William Saliba – 6

He physically fought with Harry Kane. A fair exhibition.

Gabriel Magalhães – 6

He almost put the ball in his own goal in the 57th minute. But I hung in there.

Takehiro Tomiyasu – 7

He made the difference on the left side. It was difficult for the opposition to advance on his flank.

Declan Rice – 7.5

Solid in both defense and attack. He protected his backline with some forceful tackles, while constantly trying to play the ball forward.

Jorginho – 6.5

Some well executed tackles and a good contrast for the center backs behind him.

Martin Odegaard – 6.5

A workhorse, as always. With that pressure he put pressure on Bayern’s defense and gave Gabriel Martinelli a great opportunity to score.

Bukayo Saka – 5.5

He was deprived of the ball for much of the game. When he got it, he couldn’t pierce Bayern’s defense. This hampered his team.

Gabriel Martinelli – 6

Moments of clever footwork. He should have done better in the 31st minute, shooting directly at Manuel Neuer.

Kai Havertz – 5.5

He couldn’t chain the game in the usual way.

I got the call right on the left side. Surely she would have wanted more of the open men from him.

Referee:

There are no issues of controversy. The game went smoothly.
