Newcastle sporting director Paul Mitchell watched Burnley’s James Trafford at the weekend and the club are considering renewing their relationship with the England Under-21 goalkeeper.

Mail Sport exclusively revealed in June that Eddie Howe’s side had unsuccessfully submitted a bid of around £16million for the Burnely goalkeeper.

Talks had been ongoing but the Clarets are understood to have been seeking a fee of around £20m for Trafford.

Howe sees him as an excellent addition to compete with first-choice goalkeeper Nick Pope, with Trafford’s contract at the Lancashire club expiring in 2027.

The 21-year-old joined Burnley in a £19million transfer from Manchester City in July 2023 but endured a difficult season in the English top flight.

“It’s one of the positions where I have the luxury of having two good players, so at any time I can make a decision that I think is best for the team,” said the Belgian coach.

“It’s not a big decision, it’s not a difficult decision, it’s just two good players fighting and I’m not going to shy away from having that luxury in as many positions as I can.”

Trafford, a Manchester City academy graduate, made his England Under-21 debut in June 2022, during a 5-0 win over Kosovo.

He has since won 17 caps and featured in every game as England triumphed at the 2023 Under-21 European Championship, not conceding a single goal throughout the tournament.
