Melania Trump said she believed God was watching over her husband Donald Trump during the two attempts on his life and blamed Democrats for creating a “toxic” political atmosphere that led to the two assassination attempts.

“Is it really shocking that all this heinous violence is being done to my husband?” the former first lady said in an interview with Fox News to promote her upcoming memoir.

“Especially because we hear opposition party leaders and mainstream media calling him a threat to democracy and calling him names. They are just fuelling a toxic atmosphere and all those people they wanted to harm… this has to stop. The country needs to come together and I encourage everyone to re-read the letter I wrote on 14 July because this cannot continue.”

Trump, 54, sat down with Fox News’ Ainsley Earhardt in New York for a taped interview, excerpts of which aired on Fox and Friends on Thursday morning.

In the wide-ranging interview, which was her first in two years, she discussed the 2024 presidential race, her life in the White House and how modeling prepared her to be first lady of the United States.

It included behind-the-scenes photos, including some never-before-seen images of Barron Trump.

But he also spoke about the recent attempts on the life of the former president.

“I think something was looking out for him. It’s almost like the country really needed him,” he said.

Melania Trump, who has long been seen as a reluctant political spouse, said she supported Donald Trump’s political ambitions.

“I support him. I know how passionate he is about making America great again,” she said.

She hesitated when asked about the possibility of Kamala Harris replacing Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee, and pivoted to promoting her husband’s presidential campaign.

“All he wants, as he says, is to make America great again. He wants this country to be prosperous and safe for everyone. He wants the American dream to be possible again,” he said.

Melania Trump has yet to appear at any of her husband’s political rallies. She attended his presidential nomination speech and watched him address the Republican National Convention. But she has not attended any of the presidential debates and has stayed out of the election.

Still, she told Fox News that her early modeling career and work in the fashion world prepared her to be first lady.

“I think nothing prepared me more to be first lady in the eyes of the world than the fashion industry,” she said.

“The fashion industry is glamorous, but at the same time it’s very harsh. Everyone judges you, looks at you in a certain way. So it can also be a cruel world. So nothing prepared me more for this world than fashion. It makes you have thick skin,” Trump added.

The notoriously private former first lady also touched on her family life, saying it was difficult to tell her 18-year-old son Barron about his father’s assassination attempt and offered some insight into her husband.

He described Donald Trump as “a family man. He loves his country and all he wants is to build a better and prosperous country.”

And when asked what she liked most about him, she said: “His humor, his personality, his kindness, it’s very special. His positivity. His energy. It’s amazing.”

She also revealed that he wanted to have more children, but she was fine with just Barron.

“I always felt perfectly fine with it. And Donald would encourage me to have more and I would tell him I was perfectly fine with one because I have a very busy life. And I know how busy he is. And I’m in charge of everything. So it’s just perfect,” she said.

His book is about his four years in the White House.

She described being first lady as having “extra, extra responsibility.”

And he told Fox News that he connected with Brigette Macron, the first lady of France, whom he described as “fun.”

She also said she was close to Akie Abe, Japan’s former first lady, and expressed her condolences for her. Abe’s husband, Shinzo Abe, was assassinated in July 2022.

Trump, who was born in Slovenia, spoke of her pride in becoming an American citizen, having been granted citizenship on July 28, 2006.

She told Fox News she “went through the process” but did not elaborate. Questions have arisen about her visa status. She had a visa reserved for immigrants with “extraordinary ability” and “sustained national and international recognition.”

There have also been questions about whether he used his status to help his parents gain citizenship, a process known as “chain migration.” Donald Trump has criticized “chain migration” and immigration in general.

“I felt very proud. I went through the whole process and that day was a big celebration. I felt very, very proud,” she said.

Trump sat down with Fox News to talk about Melania, his memoir due out October 8.

Earhardt looked through the book and said it includes photos of Barron from his childhood and the family in the White House. During the interview, she showed a photo of Melania working at her desk in Trump Tower with a young Barron playing on a toy car in front of her.

“I think it’s very important that we show our children that we’re working to give them an example of what life is like. That they see us as really productive people, that we have ideas. That ideas become reality,” Trump said.

The former first lady, who has been the subject of several biographies, said she wrote her memoirs because the time had come to tell her story.

“I think it was time to tell my story and the truth. There is a lot of misinformation and falsehoods written about me. And I want to set the record straight so people can learn some things that weren’t talked about. I hope they enjoy the book,” she said.
