Matt Healy seemingly made a comment about his former flame Taylor Swift when he referred to their ‘casual romantic liaisons’ in a recent interview and explained why he no longer writes about heartbreak and his past relationships.
Matty, 35, and Taylor, 34, dated very briefly last year, but split in June 2023, and she appeared to reference their brief romance on her latest album, The Tortured Poets Department, which was released on April of this year.
Taylor is widely believed to have taken aim at The 1975 frontman in her song The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived, but Matty has now claimed that writing about past romances is “such an obvious thing to capitalize on”.
During an appearance on Joshua Citarella’s podcast fatal scrollMatty spoke about his process of making music and what he likes to write, saying: ‘Last year I became a much more well-known public figure for many different reasons. The only reason I was interested is because of what he was doing.
“So I think a lot of artists are very interested in their history, or interested in things that have happened outside of their art that people know about, and they want to address that, and that’s fair.”
Matty Healy apparently took a dig at Taylor Swift this week when he appeared on the Doomscroll podcast.

Referring to his band The 1975, he continued: “Maybe on my first record, when it was more of a series of diary entries, like little bits of anguish, I used to write a lot more about relationships and stuff like that.
“But honestly, I’d be lying if I made a record about, I don’t know, all the things that were said about me or my casual romantic relationships or whatever, that I’ve become known about.” “Just because he was famous,” he said.
“I think it’s an obvious thing to fall back on and I’m just not interested.” And I think maintaining the status quo is something I always like to fight against,” he added.
“So the idea of making a record about something that happened to me personally, which by the time I release it will be like two years old, I see people doing that too, and it’s not interesting.”
Meanwhile, Taylor is known for allegedly writing songs about her past lovers, including John Mayer, One Direction star Harry Styles, and Twilight actor Taylor Lautner.
Following the release of The Tortured Poet’s Department, a source told Us Weekly that Matty’s reaction to the supposed song about him was positive and that people close to him “couldn’t be happier” with how the record turned out.
A source said: “Matty still thinks highly of Taylor, but we were all nervous about what she might have said on the album.”
‘Matty’s family were worried that Taylor was going to destroy him. Matty has struggled with life in the public eye and done very well, but the last thing he needs is for all the Swifties in the world to think he’s a villain.
Taylor, pictured here on October 18, is known for allegedly writing songs about her ex-boyfriends.
Another insider told the publication, “He was worried about his story being cast in a negative light,” but was “really grateful for the heads up” he received from Taylor.
However, it seems that Matty didn’t pay much attention to the record overall, as when an Entertainment Tonight reporter asked him in April what he thought of the ‘diss track,’ he politely replied, “I haven’t really listened.” “So far, but I’m sure it’s good.”
The lyrics of The Littlest Man Who Ever Lived refer to a man in a ‘Jehovah’s Witness outfit’ and ‘rusting my bright summer (by Swift)’. Matty is known for wearing distinctive black suits during live performances and the couple are believed to have split in June 2023.
