A Republican state representative allegedly strangled his wife after she confronted him and his lover about their affair in Maine.

Lucas Lanigan, 45, of Springvale, turned himself in at the York County Jail about 9:30 a.m. Monday after he allegedly strangled his wife for “approximately 20 seconds,” Sergeant Jeremy Riddle said in a statement. affidavit, seen by Bangor Daily News.

His wife, Catalina Lanigan, 43, confronted her husband on Friday at Springvale Safe Storage on River Street shortly before 1pm, where the couple argued before he allegedly tried to strangle her.

He was charged with aggravated assault by domestic violence and is currently lodged in the York County Jail, where he is not eligible for release, according to Maine News Center.

Lanigan is up for re-election next week and is running against Democrat Patricia Kidder.

However, Maine House Democrats have called for his “immediate resignation” in a statement on Tuesday.

‘We are stunned, shocked and horrified by the details of the charges against Rep. Lucas Lanigan that were revealed in an affidavit from the Sanford Police Department.

“Domestic violence of any kind is unacceptable,” the statement continued. ‘These serious allegations demonstrate that Rep. Lanigan is clearly unfit to continue serving as a state representative.

“We agree with President Rachel Talbot Ross’s call for her to resign and hope she will take it upon herself to do the right thing.”

Ross said Lanigan “violated” the “demands (of) integrity and accountability” demanded by those who serve the public.

‘For the good of our State and its constituents, I ask for your immediate resignation. And I ask that all leaders join me in standing firmly against domestic violence and asking that Rep. Lanigan submit his official resignation,” she said, according to Bangor Daily News.

However, other state representatives are waiting for more information before calling for his resignation.

House Republican Leader Billy Bob Faulkingham said the legal process would have to “run its course” before commenting, according to News Maine Center.

Lanigan is expected to appear in court via Zoom on Wednesday at 1 p.m.
