Firefighters made the grim discovery of a body inside a property in what police suspect was a late-night arson attack.
The grim discovery came after fire crews were called to put out a fire in the northern Victorian town of Kerang shortly after midnight on Saturday.
Although the fire at the Lilac Avenue property was extinguished, the sole occupant inside could not be saved.

The fire broke out shortly after midnight on Saturday in the border town of Kerang, between Victoria and New South Wales.
A crime scene has been established as police investigate the circumstances of the fire.
“Sadly, a body was found inside the property once the fire was extinguished,” Victoria Police said in a statement.
Arson and Explosives Squad officers and an arson chemist have been called to the scene.
Police are urging anyone who may have information about the incident to come forward.
