New Yorkers passing by the Dawson’s Creek alum probably did a double take, trying to recognize the woman wearing a pair of charcoal-colored wide-leg pants with frayed hems and distressed black leather ballet flats.

The actress, 45, who donned a sweater earlier in the week, took advantage of the warmer temperatures to offer a glimpse of her toned tummy by leaving her purple and white striped shirt partially unbuttoned.

Her long, dark hair was pulled back into a loose bun and her makeup looked natural behind a pair of black-framed sunglasses.

Holmes was carrying a white and tan leather handbag with a shoulder strap and a white shopping bag with purple lettering containing some purchases.

The actress recently took her only daughter, Suri Cruise, 18, off to college and now her nest is empty.

The freshman is believed to be focusing on acting and dance at the private university in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, while her mother looks for new film and theater projects.

Suri’s father, Tom Cruise, 62, has reportedly honored his divorce agreement with Holmes and paid for his daughter’s college tuition, which is said to be about $65,000 a year.

The Rare Objects director and star was just days away from the start of previews for Thornton Wilder’s Our Town as she headed to the Big Apple.

Holmes plays Mrs. Webb in the revival of the Pulitzer Prize-winning drama.

Zoey Deutch, 29, plays his daughter Emily.

At a recent promotional event, Holmes described Mrs Webb as “strong” and thinks the character is “probably smarter than her husband”.

Richard Thomas, 73, of The Waltons, will play Mr. Webb, and The Big Bang Theory’s Jim Parsons will take on the role of stage manager.

Ephraim Sykes will play George Gibbs and Billy Eugene Jones will play his father, Dr. Gibbs, in the contemporary update of the play.

The first shows were scheduled to begin on September 17 and the official opening was planned for October 10 at the Barrymore Theatre on Broadway.

Last week, Holmes and Sykes were spotted cuddling up to each other at the Our Town press preview at the Algonquin Hotel in New York City.
