Joely Richardson has spoken of taking a defiant stance against “age stereotypes” after her “strong” fashion choices were compared to Princess Diana’s “revenge” look.
The actress, 59, who has appeared in three hit TV shows this year alone, has sported a variety of adventurous looks at promotional events, including wearing fishnet stockings and a black minidress at the London premiere of The Gentlemen .
Taller Marmo’s Velvet Gina dress drew comparisons to the iconic off-the-shoulder Christina Stambolian dress worn by Diana in 1994.
Earlier this week, she wowed once again in a glamorous red dress while attending the star-studded premiere of the Disney+ series The renegade Nell.
Joely paired her ensemble with red suede heeled boots and wore jewelry from Sonia Petroff, Nada Ghazal and 886 from The Royal Mint, with a designer Hermes bag.

Talking with him TelegraphThe star, who will turn 60 next year, said she chose the dress for its “exuberance” and “strong” appearance to channel her Lady Eularia character.
While promoting The Gentleman, Joely turned heads on the red carpet in a black Taller Marmo Velvet Gina dress with tasseled hem and matching sleeves.
She told the publication that she and her stylist, Jennifer Michalski-Bray, make “last-minute decisions.”
Joely explained: ‘The black Taller Marmo dress came about as a result of the fabulous Hermès boots; The boots chose the dress. I love fishnet stockings, so I wanted those too.’
Referring to Princess Diana’s daring off-the-shoulder dress designed by Greek designer Christina Stambolian and which became known as the ‘revenge’ dress, she marveled at the idea of her own look being compared to the spectacular one.
“It was a fun moment when the dress was nicknamed ‘the revenge dress, no revenge’ because I had nothing to get revenge for. It was a night of pure fun celebrating the work we had all done.”
“I’m so happy that older women are being celebrated in fashion right now with things like Maggie Smith’s Loewe campaign.”
Her comments come after Joely revealed that “no agent wanted to work with her” after turning 50 while reflecting on ageism in Hollywood.
Speaking on This Morning about her professional struggles in later life, Joely shared this week: “My agent retired quite young to be with her mother.”

“I’m so happy that older women are being honored in fashion right now,” she added.
She continued: ‘I went to find another agent and no one wanted me. Zero people wanted a woman over 50 years old.
“So we started with small details where we could get in the door to get people to consider me for roles. Then they began to arrive.
In recent years, she has landed roles in Hollywood blockbusters like Red Sparrow and, in a nod to her famous BBC role, a role in the 2022 Netflix remake of Lady Chatterley’s Lover.
Now, approaching 60, she has taken advantage of a series of television roles, playing complicated and mostly unpleasant middle-aged women.
She told The Times it’s a path she enjoys, joking: ‘I’ve obviously entered the pantomime stage of my career and I should be very lucky!
“It turns out that that was my destiny: to get to play comedy and these really hyperactive roles. It feels very rewarding to play a wide variety of people, rather than (being asked), ‘Does she look good in this dress?’
This year alone, Joely appears in three hit television shows.
