In a recent interview, Matt revealed how his role as Prince Philip on The Crown helped him secure the job.
He said The Telegraph: ‘I was lucky. I’m not sure Thomas had a great knowledge of English actors or his work.
Matt added: “But I had seen The Crown and enjoyed it.”
Admitting that he is a big fan of the German director, he continued: “It’s quite impressive. I always thought that if I ever worked in London, I would sign up and go see it, because that’s the kind of theater I want to get involved with – the material that try to push things to the limit… everywhere.’
It comes after Matt was announced as the lead in Sky’s TV series adaptation of Nick Cave’s novel, The Death of Bunny Munro.
The actor will take on the lead role of Bunny Munro, a grieving sex addict who recently lost his wife Libby to suicide.
Nick, 66, will executive produce the six-part series written by Pete Jackson (Somewhere Boy) and directed by Isabella Eklöf (Industry, Holiday).
The story follows self-proclaimed lothario Bunny Munro and his young son named Bunny Junior as they take an increasingly out-of-control road trip through the south of England.
They both struggle to contain their pain in very different ways.
While Bunny jumps from one sales pitch to another, trying to seduce any woman he meets, Bunny Junior attempts to talk to his mother’s ghost and distract himself from the realization that his father’s life is crumbling around him.
As he begins to fall apart, Bunny realizes that he must do something to rescue his son from his own outdated notions of what it is to be a man.
The search for an actor to play young Bunny Junior is already underway, in the hope of discovering an exciting new talent.
Matt, whose acting credits include The Crown, Doctor Who and House of The Dragon, said: “Working alongside Nick Cave on The Death of Bunny Munro is a great honour.” It is a brilliant exploration of love, pain and chaos.
‘At its core, it is a deep, difficult and tender story about a father and son facing loss and change.
‘Clerkenwell Films and Sky seem like the perfect home to make such a bold story and Pete has delivered scripts that are equal parts wonderful, funny and heartbreaking.
“I can’t wait to collaborate with Isabella and begin the journey with everyone in Clerkenwell.”
Windsor actor Hugh Skinner was also present at the event and wore an elegant black coat.
Actor Roger Allam also made an appearance and looked dapper in a brown suit and statement silk scarf.

Nick added: “Finally, someone has the courage to take on this ungodly story.”
“I’m delighted that Sky and Clerkenwell Films are bringing Bunny to life, in all his imperfect glory, and I can’t think of anyone better than Matt Smith to play him.”
The Death of Bunny Munro is produced by Clerkenwell Films, owned by BBC Studios, in association with Sky Studios.
The series will begin filming in spring 2024 in the south of England, with the premiere date to be confirmed at a future date.
It will be available on Sky Atlantic and the streaming service NOW in the UK.
