What is a play-off and why is it on the calendar?
This year, the athletics events in Paris will see several changes. The first, and perhaps most notable, is that in an effort to achieve gender parity, there will be an equal number of gold medals available for men and women competing at the Games this year. This year also sees the introduction of the repechage rounds to the athletics events at the Olympic Games, which are part of the programme mentioned above. Repechage rounds have been added to individual track events from 200 m to 1500 m, including hurdles events; athletes who fail to qualify by position in the first round heats will have a second chance to qualify for the semi-finals during the repechage heats.
