How to disable Google ads on sensitive topics

All you need to do to hide ads for a particular topic is to flip the corresponding switch on this screen. You can hide as many or as few topics as you like, and the changes take effect immediately. If you decide you’re happy to see ads associated with a particular topic again, just flip the switch again.

Of course, this won’t affect all the ads you see online, just those that appear in spaces that Google controls. This will include ads in Google search results, in the Google Play Store, in Google Shopping links, and on Google Maps, as well as on any site that partners with Google to provide its advertising (which is a lot).

Switch to the other tabs on the same screen and you’ll see that there are several other settings you can change, which apply to all the Google ads you see. Topics The tab shows the topics that Google thinks you are interested in and the Brands The tab shows brands that Google thinks you’re interested in, and on both screens you can sort the lists by the ads you’ve seen most recently or the ads you’ve seen most frequently in total.

Next to all topics and brands, you’ll see plus and minus buttons, meaning you can see more or less of a particular topic or brand. These settings don’t hide ads entirely, like the responsive topics feature does, but they will change the mix of ads you want to see. For example, if you want more vacation rental ads and fewer TV ads, you can make that adjustment.

You can modify the type of ads and brands you see.

Go to the My ads On this page, you’ll be able to see recent topics, recent brands, and even individual ads that have been shown to you recently. Again, these individual items will have plus and minus buttons, so you can adjust Google’s algorithm to see more or less of each particular ad type.
